"The mechanical hard drive sector has been consolidating rapidly to help combat the rise of SSD’s..."

I don't really understand this statement. It rather reminds me of the US Postal Service wanting income from e-mail because they failed to evolve. How is it that mechanical drive companies have failed to recognize and/or act on the superior technology offered by that of SSDs? There's no question that there is a place for mechanical drives, given price per gigabyte and the delta in maximum size, but these companies will be extinct eventually.

The consolidation of drive manufacturers obviously doesn't help the consumer either. As the competition is reduced, pricing increases due to lack of competition...

Hopefully this will result in Seagate forcing Lacie to stop producing low quality products

Does anyone really believe we will still be using hard drives in 10 more years?

Back in at least the 70's (maybe a LOT earlier though, I can't be bothered to look it up) Carl Sagan (iirc) predicted that pot would be legal in ten years. Look how that turned out.

And there's a LOT more evidence for why pot should/will become legal than than there is that we will completely eliminate the existence of hard disk drives in just 10 years. Then again, technology moves at break-neck speed and who knows what will happen in ten years.
