Sandy Bridge-E Specs Leak to the Web
A week ago today, a leaked roadmap revealed Intel's future desktop processor plans, including the launch of the chip maker's high-end Sandy Bridge-E platform in the fourth quarter of 2011. Other than providing some rough launch estimates, the slides didn't provide much in the way of clockspeeds or other specifications. As luck would have it, yet another slide has made its way to the Web, and this one's a little more revealing than the last.
The slide was posted by Chinese website XFastest.com, and assuming nothing's been doctored, here's what you can expect from upcoming Sandy Bridge-E chips:
- An unlocked six-core Sandy Bridge-E chip clocked at 3.2GHz with 12MB of cache in the fourth quarter of 2011. This will fall under Intel's "Premium Performance" tier.
- An unlocked six-core Sandy Bridge-E chip clocked at 3.3GHz with 15MB of cache in the fourth quarter of 2011. This will fall under Intel's "Extreme" tier.
- A "limited unlocked" quad-core Sandy Bridge-E chip clocked at 3.6GHz with 10MB of cache in the fourth quarter of 2011. This will fall under Intel's "Premium Performance" tier.
The roadmap also shows the same chips appearing in the first half of 2012 as Intel's 22nm Ivy Bridge platform begins to replace certain lower end Sandy Bridge parts.

Will you be able to put a sandy bridge in the new 2011 socket? If you are then will the sandy or in the future ivy bridge be able to use the new chipset and boards new features?

So this means that 1155 is out after 2011. Great!
If Intel keeps changing their damn socket every 12 months they are going to end up shooting themselves in the foot.I just bought a 1155 mobo. Shit! (albeit budget build)
Maybe I will go with AMD for my next real build, they may not be able to compete with the latest and greatest Intel procs, but atleast they provide an upgrade path. That way when intel changes it up AGAIN, AMD will have better performance than intels abandoned.
They probably just want to force everyone to upgrade thier mobo to one that has lightpeak
Thoughts?

Dude, I am running my Sandy Bridge at 4.53 GHz with just a Hyper 212 cooler, me being the CONSERVATIVE guy that I am. With a 6 core processor ready to drop in during the fall, what on earth could I ask for an UPGRADE? As for CPU and Mobo, these is just no way I can see myself upgrading them for 2-3 years (an eternity for me).
AMD can bitch and moan and try FUD, but they will never be able to touch Sandy Bridge for at least a couple of years. Sandy Bridge is THAT good.
And its not like the CPU and mobo are THAT expensive. I spent $500 for my set and that was the cost of just my mobo on my i7-920 rig.
Lightpeak will probably be available as a drop in PCI card at some point but I am not too worried about it. I have yet to even turn on my USB 3.0 ports let alone have any use for lightpeak.

Good point.
I must have missed the fact that they are going to be realeasing a six core for 1155 in the fall. But is it not frustrating that they have to change the socket so often. I mean come on.
If not only because its one more thing (for people like us) to keep up with.i7, i5, i3, p67, h67, 1366, 1156, 1155...
As for AMD, we will have to see what Bulldozer brings.
And intel may have still have them on the cpu side, but gpu I think amd will have the edge shortly.

I like the reply. With all the speed that is coming out with new cpu's and graphics. If I buy now, I won't have to worry for another 5 years. And even with USB 3.0, doubt there are that many companies that are ready to make stuff for it.
Oh can I ask your specs JohnP?

If you looked at the slide, you will notice the new procs are set to be LGA2011.

SIX core Sandy Bridges! Now that will be awesome! Oh, snap. I just read about "responsible tech buying and recycling". Geez, now I feel guilty. Well, at least my town and state responsibly recycle.
