Samsung's New DVD Writer Boasts Speedy Load Times
Conventional wisdom says you can't teach an old dog new tricks, just don't try pitching such nonsense to the engineers at Samsung, who found a way to make DVD writers newsworthy. Samsung's new SH-222AB internal DVD writer is like many other modern optical drives, except this one boasts a fast 'Lead-In' that Samsung claims considerably reduces disc recognition time from the moment you pop a disc into the drive to the when it loads.
"The SH-222AB DVD writer reduces its Lead-In time up to 60 percent at maximum," Samsung says. "Prior to this, users of traditional DVD writers had to wait 15 to 30 seconds of load time to start after inserting a disc into the drive. By reducing the lag time, Samsung's SH-222AB enables a much richer experience for ODD users looking for quick start-up operation."
Other vitals include:
- 48X CD-ROM reading
- 40X CD-RW reading
- 22 DVD±R recording
- 12X DVD-RAM recording
- 16X DVD±R Dual Layer recording
- 8X DVD±RW recording
- 6X DVD-RW recording
Perhaps the best part about this is Samsung didn't use the new technology as an excuse to jack up the price. The SH-222AB is available now in the U.S. and carries an MSRP of $29.

I would hate to be in the optical drive business. They damn near give these things away.

Seriously, who cares? My $20 Liteon drive does it fast enough. I don't really care about a few seconds. I just put in a CD-R, and the time from the drive being fully closed to it appearing was 13 seconds. Who cares?

This is like asking, "Who cares about a faster boot time?" Or, "Who cares about Wireless-N over Wireless-G if you're only surfing the web?" Or, "Who cares about shaving five seconds off their load level time?"
I suppose maybe people who want a faster recog time, coupled with a much quieter optical drive, would care.

I own an Asus 20X DVD lightscribe writer that is a great drive all around but the time it takes to reconize a disc is kinda slow. I can't understand why it takes along time, anyone know?

Have you seen DVD writer prices lately? You can get burners for $18-20 regularly at places like NewEgg. But the extra ~$10 or so, it might be worth it for this Samsung drive.
