Samsung Offers 1TB Internal Hard Drive For Laptops
Laptops are catching up to traditional computers in a lot of ways, but they're still lagging a bit behind in terms of disk space. Terabyte hard drives aren't quite a dime a dozen on desktops, but you can still find a decent one for under $100, and we've seen several PCs sporting a TB drive with their basic configurations. Laptops haven't been so lucky, though – manufacturers simply aren't offering 1TB options. Samsung's coming to the rescue of storage-deprived portable PC owners with the announcement of a new 1TB internal hard drive designed for use with laptops.
The 9.5mm-slim Spinpoint M8 features two separate 500GB platters for a total storage size of 1TB, according to Samsung's press release. Samsung says they achieved the small size by using an advanced formatting technology that allows them to store more data per unit area, making the overall hard drive denser. The drive uses a 3 gigabits/second SATA interface and includes 8MB of buffer memory.
If you need to beef your portable storage, you can pick up the Spinpoint M8 soon for $129.99.

Or you could consider WD's $110 option...

It's always nice when someone creates the first of something. It's not as nice when the second of something is treated as the first.

Hey can anyone make out the details printed on the image of the HDD? Those labels usually mention cache size and speed I think.

It was terrible news when Samsung was potentially bought out by Seagate. I love Samsung hard drives, I have bought over 15 of them!

Just sayin but there have been 1TB internal 2.5" drives for a long time. Sure they don't all fit every laptop but they have been around a while.

Hi guys,
This is all the information Samsung's put out for now - no mention of drive speed. I thought it was kind of weird, too. As far as Seagate - Samsung, they've agreed to a deal, but US and European Union officials haven't given them the stamp of approval yet. So, for now at least, Samsung's still in the hard drive business.

On Samsung's site, I go to "Internal Storage" and I ony see SSD's available. It's possible that the merger with Seagate is more of a business partnership. Although Samsung's HDD line is supposedly gone, perhaps the two companies are now producking Samsung-labeled drives for OEM purposes. I can't find where to buy this drive anywhere, anyway

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Samsung just sell off it's hard drive line? Or is this different, did they keep their laptop HDD line?

PS3 owners will love this as well, due to the height. No word on drive speed?
