Samsung Looks to Sell off its Hard-Drive Division
Competition in the hard drive sector has done wonders for consumer pricing, but it’s about to take a toll on another supplier. According to Reuters Samsung is looking to exit the spinning disk sector by selling off the losing division as soon as possible. Sources quoted by the newspaper claim they are hoping to rake in as much as $1.5 billion from the sale, but might be willing to entertain bids as low as $1 billion if necessary.
Speculation as to possible suitors pretty much starts and ends with Seagate since Western Digital is in the early days of their merger with Hitachi. Western Digital by comparison paid about $4.3 billion for Hitachi, however Hitachi had a much larger share of the market to back up the price. Samsung still has a very robust component business including memory chips and flat screens, however it never seems to have established itself in the hard drive sector.
Neither Samsung or Seagate have made any official comment on the matter, but expect to hear more in the coming weeks.

LOL didn't read the part that WD is already weakened due to the aquisition of Hitachi. Bet they are kicking themselves in the butt right now, as Samsung has a whole, competent and quite healthy SSD division

This sale doesn't include that division, though. Just standard magnetic disc HDD's.

I have a couple of Samsung 500 MB for a few years and they still work fine. (at the time when I bought them, they were $25 cheaper than WD).

Yes, I bought 4 of the Samsung 1.5 TB discs for my D drive RAID array 2 years ago. I never had a problem with them.

I bought 8 of their 5400rpm 2TB drives for a RAID 5 and have been using them for one year. They have not had any issues and I am very sad to see them selling their HD division. Samsung would have been my only company for HDD's in the future.
I look forward to seeing if they produce SSD's and how well they perform.

That's a damn shame. The only hard drives I have ever bought were Samsungs. Great reliability, better than average performance, and always quieter than other drives I've had in my system from other manufacturers. If they were cranking out duds, I could understand this.. but it just doesn't make sense when I've had nothing but good experiences with their drives.

I hope not, I actually like the Spinpoint F1 series. They had the first real 1TB and 1.5TB drives that were worth their salt. I really hate seeing an innovative company call it quits like this. Maybe if they are going to start producing SSD's that would be good. The Samsung execs must be drunk on Kimchi or something.

Damn straight. THe Spinpoint drives were rock solid! Hitachi drives were damn good too. Its a shame that they're going to Western Digital...
