Samsung Galaxy Player is an Android Alternative to Apple's iPod

Microsoft tried to topple Apple's iPod empire with its Zune player and was unsuccessful in doing so. Now Samsung will take a crack at it with the company's new Galaxy Player devices built around Google's Android platform. Samsung will ship two Galaxy Player models next month, including the 4-inch Galaxy Player 4.0 and 5-inch Galaxy Player 5.0.

The bigger model weighs 6.4 ounces and the 4-inch devices check in at 4.2 ounces. Other than the size and weight, they're the same media player powered by the same Android build (version 2.3.5, or Gingerbread). Even the screen resolution is the same for both devices, with each one featuring an 800x480 WVGA LCD screen.

Other specs include a 1GHz processor, 8GB of internal memory (expandable via microSD card slot), 3.2MP rear-facing camera, VGA front-facing camera, mini USB port, Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and robust audio and video format support.

Samsung also announced a new tablet, the Galaxy Tab 8.9. It's similar to the Galaxy Tab 10.1, but in a smaller form factor. Specs include a dual-core T250S processor, 1280x800 pixel resolution, Gorilla Glass, 3MP rear-facing camera, 2MP front-facing camera, and various other odds and ends in a package that weighs less than one pound.

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 will start shipping October 2 in 32GB ($569) and 16GB ($469) capacities. Both the Galaxy Player 5.0 and 4.0 will be available starting October 16 for $269 and $229, respectively.
