Samsung Claims New SSDs Offer Twice the Performance

The SSD market was moving at a peaceful albeit underwhelming pace until Intel joined the party, promptly putting the smackdown on the competition. Intel's X-25M SSD proved to be twice as fast as other drives to have gone through Maximum PC's lab, helping it to earn a Kickass! award.
Now Samsung looks to follow suit, which comes as somewhat of a surprise given that the company hasn't been at that forefront of performance with SSDs topping out at less than 100MB/s. But that was before, and Samsung's new 256GB SSD not only offers up to twice as much storage space as its 64GB and 128GB models, but is more than twice as fast as well. Samsung says its 256GB comes rated at 220MB/s read and 200MB/s, or fast enough to store 25 high definition movies in just 21 minutes and able to launch applications 10 times faster than the speediest 7200RPM notebook drive.
Steven Peng, SSD technical marketing manager at Samsung, said the speed increase was made possible through multichannel interleaving, noting that "the basic architecture remains unchanged. However, there are design improvements such as optimized firmware, and improvements to the controller."
Samsung said it has begun mass producing the new 256GB SSD, but has not released information on pricing or availability.

Hard drives are going to

Hard drives are going to remain king in storage capacity for quite a while it seems, but SSD are ruling in speed, and have alot of room for improvement. At at "220MB/s read and 200MB/s write" it would take just three of these new Samsung drives in a RAID setup to completely saturate the new "SATA 6Gb/s" 600MB/s throughput specs. It would definetly be worth shelling out a few thousands for such a hardcore setup. I would be more than happy with a 64GB drive if it could completely saturate the SATA bus and was reasonably priced. That would be enough room for your OS, page file, and all your programs and games.
yeah that'd be nice an SSD

yeah that'd be nice an SSD for swap space, that way there's a more intermediate choice between RAM and virtual RAM.
Now if they would only be so

Now if they would only be so good as to offer a 500+GB size hard drive for less than $200bucks then I might be compelled to purchase one. Until then I can't justify the expense.
Actually 256GB?

I'm curious if the SSD are advertised as measured in binary or metric storage capacities. Most platter HD's are put out in 250GB but this one is 256GB which is a binary measurement (eg 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256).
Anyone know?
256 probably means 2048

256 probably means 2048 megabits. also one KB is equal to 1024 Bytes if you ask anyone normal, but HDD makers like to say there are 1000 Bytes in a KB.
my guess: SSDs are a known size, noone knows what the hell is going on with HDDs.
Difference is in the media

Only a guess, but here it goes.
SSD use memory chips all based on the 'binary' sizes we all know and have embrased all these years. HDD manufactures have been faces with differend obsticals in size and density and have kept to the 20 or 50 devisers so we have always seen nice hole numbers for thier sizes. And sence no HDD CO. can agree on how many bytes are in 1 MB we will always see the closest whole, even number of sizes.
I'm probably just talking out my ass right now, but I havent had my coffee yet this morning and the heat is busted in this part of the office with 20 degree air being piped over my desk (litteraly 20, I live in Green Bay). O_o

There's only an inch or so up here in Ontario but I'm intensly jealous of 85 temperature in late November.
