Rumor: Samsung to Ditch Netbooks in 2012
A French website claims Samsung is telling its partners via email that it intends to stop producing netbooks in 2012 and will shift its focus towards Intel's Ultrabook form factor and classic ultraportables measuring 11.6 inches and 12 inches. If true, it would mean no more 10.1-inch PCs like the popular NC10 from Samsung.
Blogeee.net first reported the news and posted an excerpt of the email in French. Letting Google Translate do its thing, it appears Samsung will stop producing 10.1-netbooks as early as the first quarter of 2012, which kicks off just a little over a month from now.
It's an interesting strategy since Ultrabooks cost so much more than netbooks and attract a different kind of buyer. However, Samsung could also simply be planning to build slightly larger netbooks to replace the 10.1-inch form factor, a move that would make more sense than abandoning the still popular netbook category altogether.

Sad to see a form factor just vanish. Why couldn't Samsung take a revolutionary step instead of just following others? I mean, is it really that hard? Make a hybrid solution where UltraBook meets NetBook and watch the revolutionary dollars come in. I still say the future lies with the tablet form factor and not the clamshell design of the 1990s.
