Rumor: Next Kindle Fire Will Sport Nvidia Inside
Amazon's only begun lighting up the tablet market with its recently introduced Kindle Fire, a $199 tablet built around a heavily customized version of Android and powered by a Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 processor, but it's never too early to look ahead. Especially if you're Nvidia, which reportedly scored a deal to supply the application processor in the next Kindle Fire device.
Canaccord Genuity analyst Bobby Burleson made the claim based on "conversations with sources in the tablet supply chain," according to Forbes. If true, that would be a huge win for Nvidia, and a big lost for Texas Instruments. It's also an intriguing proposition for consumers, especially if the next Kindle Fire ends up using a quad-core Tegra 3 chip or better.
According to Burleson, the next Kindle Fire will be a little bit bigger with an 8.9-inch screen, versus the 7-inch screen found on the current Fire. That's slightly smaller than the iPad, which has a 9.7-inch screen. It's also worth noting that the display and touchscreen are the most expensive components in the Kindle Fire, according to an IHS iSuppli teardown analysis.
