Rumor: Intel to Produce Powerhouse 32nm 6-Core Processors before Q3
There's a reason why you chose an LGA1366 motherboard over the P55-based LGA1156 options, and that's because of the 6-core upgrade path. Some of you have been rolling with X58 ever since the chipset came out and have been patiently waiting for Intel's next-gen chips. Good news -- the wait is almost over.
According to PC Adviser, Intel's 32nm 6-core chips will be launching in the first half of this year. And as you're probably already aware, these will be based on Intel's Westmere architecture.
The new parts will also come with an updated instruction set and advanced power management tools that will limit the power consumed by idle cores, so not only should they be faster than anything else currently out there, but power consumption isn't likely to be a huge worry.

Still not convinced more cores = win... When more apps start using 2+cores then there's something to be excited about.

Six cores is enough to get you wet in your chair. Man the possibilities. I wonder if the Xeon 5500 Line will have some too.

This makes my "at least 15%" criteria for upgrading so I will buy one. NOT the Enthusiast, but perhaps one notch down.
THEN I will want to use my i7 920 somewhere so new mobo and then some DDR 3 memory.
Hmmm, this is going to cost. What the hell!

The path as of today..
I7-980XE 6-core should be shipping at the end of March.
i7-970 6-core (NOT Extreme Edition!) hopefully shipping by Fall 2010. That is around the same price as the current i7-960...but add two cores and some heat! (larger heat sinks needed)
Will I upgrade from a new i7-920 to a i7-970? Oh yes ASAP. As well as to USB3 external drives, SATA 6gb/s internal drives, and from an HD5850 to 5970 ;). Right after I win the MegaMillions :)
Cyberpower i7-920 O/C 4Ghz
Asetek LCLC120 LiquidPowercolor Radeon 5850
6GB A-Data 1600 RAM
1TB SATA HDD
Asus P6x58d with USB3 / SATA6G
Asus 26" VW266H LCD @1920x1200

Its going to be a loooooong time before I see a 6 core processor in my machine. In fact, they will have to make it down to budget territory first. I won't spend more than $200 on a cpu or a video card. Thats why I waited until the Q6600 made it down to $189 and the 1GB 4870 was $149 before I jumped on those upgrades.

These can't come soon enough.
