they should come to GA, for some stupid monopolish/exclusivity reason, Verizon can't open FIOS in the whole State (hmm... now that I think of it, if Verizon can't, maybe Google can't either)

Currently you can get up to 10Gb Bandwidth from your cable company. The infrastructure is there, Which means they really don't even have to run fiber to get high speeds to your house. The good thing about this is google is giving other companies a push to start providing these types of speeds without a huge price. I guess what i am getting at is the network is already there just getting these big companies to offer it without a arm and leg has not happened yet, and i hope google gives enough push for these things to come to light.

Hey.That_Dude

Wow. Someone doesn't understand how the laws of physics work.
Yeah, sure. I could push 10Gb through a coaxial... for about 33 feet... on a good day (and a really good cable). The box to let that amount data in and out would be HUGE! Not to mention eat as much power as a SFF computer (which is basicly what that would be, just more analog).
Fiber is cheaper, better, and the future. There's a reason why every company uses it for a backbone instead of Coax.

I think you missed the point i was making. cable is already in most homes in America. And also I believe the bandwidth would be pushed by multiplexing technology to push more data at a time. Now optimally yes fiber would be best, since light waves move faster than current. But the biggest excuse that companies have about fiber is most homes are not equipped with fiber already, that would make for a whole new run of multimode fiber.

Hey.That_Dude

Okay. Point proven. Sit down for school.

1) The electric field is what is making the data travel (BTW, it is actually just a smigg faster than the the speed of light in doped glass). So speed isn't the issue. The real problems are called attenuation and interference.

2)Coaxial is multiplexed! It's call frequency division multiplexing, and it's been done on coaxial for years. However, as frequencies get higher, they suffer high attenuation loss and issues in demultiplexing. Conversly, lower frequencies attenuate less but don't carry a lot of usable data bandwidth.

3) Most companies bitch and complain, but the truth is that most companies HAVE FTTN. So going the extra 300 meters on multimode is a joke.

4) As for running it THROUGH the house: Coaxial might be fine for short runs, iff you don't have a TV service on the same line, otherwise it gets messy. Instead, just take the fiber to a router and have the router external to the house. Then you can break off the cable into a standard coaxial, break off the internet into cat, and break off phone into POTS. Small amount of renovation. Bring your home into the 21 century!

I'd be more impressed if they were expanding high speed into rural areas with wimax.

avatar

goodtime

THANK YOU for saying something about rural internet. Looks like by the time we get dsl everyone in town will have 10gb fiber or something.

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

Yeah, you guys could use a "Internet-ifying America Act"
It's one of the big drawbacks of Rural living.

Oh, and WIMAX sucks. Just use fiber for Rural too. High installation cost, but much better in the long run.

avatar

Opm2

Actually they just hit our rural area with a version of WiMax and it actually isn't bad.

3Mbs at a 60ms ping. It likes to laggy in a hard snow or rain but other than that it is really decent.

I am sure the version that does a 30mi radius has a bit higher ping but still tons lower than satellite.

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

Yeah. Now when you want to push that speed up higher you'll have to move to LTE or something else. With fiber you just change the connectors on each end, which is much cheaper. Again, laying the fiber will be expensive, but once it's there it's easy to maintain.

wondering when they're gonna break of the Comcrap/APeePee oligarchy in the SF Bay Area.

not soon enough.

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

Never, then it just becomes the ComCrap/APeePee/el Goog oligarchy.
;-P
Nah, but you can't complain. ATT and Verison made a deal with the state of Texas that they each get areas that they have exclusively to themselves as far as IPTV services. Since most of those are also bundled with internet, Austin is stuck with ATT (even though I'd go for verison fios in a heart beat).

avatar

stige

if it becomes a 3-way problem but at half the price, i'm all for it!

avatar

aarcane

C'mon, California!! Can we get a "Los angeles and orange county major metropolitan area, Southern California" announcement!! Daddy needs a new pair of internets!!

avatar

Jeffredo

I can't get anything better than Comcast or copper wire AT&T DSL in my neighborhood in this rinky-dink town of 20K. Probably be worm food before they get Google Fiber here.

avatar

If they move just a tad more up north of Austin Texas into the rural parts, I would definitely buy it. And as an added deal, I'll install Google Chrome and not block web ads, because the crap I am paying for now (Windstream) makes me want to put a bullet into my head.

This can't happen fast enough. People need to realize that this will revive the Desktop market. The reason we don't need desktop computers anymore for 95% of tasks is because available content SUCKS! Low resolution, fidelity, etc. If we could move more info faster over the web we could actually use all that power that is only available in a desktop computer.

The other big thing, bringing fiber to North America would help kill traditional TV! Please please please! We need to move all shows online and choose to watch channel by channel or show by show even episode by episode instead of paying for 200 crappy tv channels that blow chunks.

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

+1!
IDK about desktops, but I'd love to have a home server where I can stream all my pruchased content to my mobile device(in 4k glory, without a crap ton off buffering). I own it, why can't i stream it over UDP/IP to my device when it's perfectly acceptable to stream it over USB to my device for storage?

Google has repeatedly proven they are not only UNTRUSTWORTHY, but actually a threat.

It’s bad enough that Facebook is f’ng people over by stealing data; now MaxPC is pushing the evil empire as an alternative to ISPs.

yea, no thanks.

avatar

vrmlbasic

This is much like what I was thinking on this. With the rates it charges to its customers so much lower than the competition, Google must be getting something out of this, like my data. With other ISPs doing deep-packet inspection and adhering to that "6 strikes" BS, I'm not sure if they're much better than data resellers like Google but I still believe them to be better.

Anyone know a VPN that can handle gigabit speeds?

avatar

Zstreek

You should get fitted for a tinfoil hat. : ) Everybody wants your data. Whoever has your business is going to have your data, end of story. Google, love em or hate em, is here to stay. What is so wrong with providing blazing hyper fast internet?

avatar

markljackson

You should stop drinking the cool-aid. You are exactly the type of person that Google sucks in with “free stuff,” or “better stuff;" and then bends you over for a good fang.

BTW the Chinese rotting in Gulags being beaten everyday, starved, and worked like dogs; they all just love Google SELLING THEM OUT.

avatar

Zstreek

markljackson - so what company is not like google? If you don't like google who do you like? My point is that they are all the same. Every company is going to comply with the law of the land where they operate even if the law is bad or wrong.

avatar

The Mac

You and Bukwinkle need to get together...

Who gives a rats ass, they can have my data...not like im making any money on it..

If it gets me better speeds, ill gladly bend over and take one up the poop shoot....

avatar

stige

gulags are Russian. not Chinese.

and speaking of tinfoil hats.....

avatar

Eagle70ss

Laogai = gulag...we could call it beechnut if you like...
