Rumor: Dell Diving into Low-Cost Notebook Market in August

It seems everyone and their mother has jumped onto ultaportable bandwagon, and now it appears the mother of all OEMs will be getting in on the action too. Citing un-named "market sources", DigiTimes says come August, Dell will introduce a low-cost notebook of its own.
Dell's anticipated late entry has given other first-tier vendors the jump, but helping to play catch-up, Dell can be expected to use its leverage as a leader in the OEM market to undercut the competition. DigiTimes claims the Dell E series low-cost laptop will cost just $299, which checks in $100 cheaper than Acer's Aspire One. The anonymous sources also estimate Dell can penetrate the market with 2-3 million units this year.

Add one point for Dell's

Add one point for Dell's chat-based notebook support. Apparently there was a painting screw up on my Inspiron 9400's cover-plate which you remove to access the memory modules, and the paint bubbled and peeled off from the heat. Using Dell's chat-based tech support, I was amazingly able to have the problem resolved without actually having to reboot my notebook ten times and change the screen resolution, or go into the BIOS, or format my harddrive and reinstall windows. In fact, the rep took me at my word that this was a physical paint problem having nothing to do with the operation of the computer. Wow. And in chat no less.
In well under 48 hours, I have the replacement part. Dell's chat-base tech support r0x0rz this time around.

Hopefully by Xmas the prices will be even lower. I need a good portable internet computer. I like Acer for price and quality, but I'm willing to change for the right price.
Acer Aspire 5610z,Vista HP, No problems with Vista... so far, but I'm learning Linux, just in case.
Acer Aspire 5315-2153, $348 Walmart Special,Mandriva Linux 2008.1 Spring Edition
Quality?

One has to wonder about the quality of these machines at those prices, what will they cut to compete? While ultraportable is desirable, the actual performance is much too lossy.
You miss spelled Acer.
I agree
