Rumor: Asus Building Inexpensive Chrome OS Netbook for June Release
We've always held that netbooks and tablets can coexist, though if netbooks are to stay relevant, PC makers may have to experiment with lower priced models. Word on the Web is that Asus is planning exactly that and will launch a new non-Windows netbook in June for around $200 to $250. At that price, it would be hard to ignore, especially with today's worthwhile tablets running $500 and up.
According to DigiTimes, Asus will build the ultra-cheap netbook around either Google's Chrome OS, or possibly Android 3.0. Given that Android 3.0 was designed specifically for tablets, we think it much more likely Chrome OS will get the nod. Further supporting that notion, Asus (along with several others) were named as Chrome launch partners back in 2009.
The great thing about Chrome OS is that it doesn't need high end hardware to thrive. Everything's done in the cloud, so all you need is a basic set of components, which is exactly what you'd find in a low priced netbook.
