Repair Fail: CompUSA Installs Files on Wrong Hard Drive
Big name PC repair shops don't need any more bad publicity, but they're getting it anyway courtesy of a pretty embarrassing SNAFU by CompUSA. Here's what happened.
According to CBS News in Chicago, a woman named Kymberli Mulford entrusted the CompUSA in Hoffman Estates with removing a nasty virus on her system that she believed was causing it to shut down. Around the same time, Karen Davis took her PC in to th same store for repairs. CompUSA purportedly took care of both issues, but they also installed Mulford's files on Davis's PC. Oops!
"It was everything, pictures of her kids, notes, and emails," Davis said. "Even what meds her kids were taking, just very personal stuff."
Davis did the right thing by getting in touch with Mulford to tell her what happened, but now Mulford fears her data could have been loaded onto other machines too.
"All of that information is a gold mine for thieves," said Roger Safian, a computer security expert. "They back up all the data first, then they re-install it after they remove the virus, and that could be how they ended up making this mistake. They re-installed one person's data to the other person's machine."
According to CompUSA, the tech and his supervisor were fired because of the incident.

Actually if you think this is bad I have more news for you. As an ex-technician that was axed to be replaced by an EX-Circuit City employee I have PLENTY of news for the public.
1. The tech are NOT fully trained all the time. Its pretty much heres your shirt now get to work.
2. They use PIRATED and cracked Windows OS'es to reinstall your OS.
3. Virus removals are done with GeekSquad MRI disks that are downloaded from torrents.
4. All their software that is used is NOT legit. They are all downloaded from online and the management is FULLY aware of this.

Actually, Systemax (parent company of TigerDirect, purchased CompUSA and Circuit City). There are now over 40 CompUSA retail outlets and growing.

I can't believe it happened in the Hoffman Estates store. I've purchased items there when it was a TigerDirect before the buyout and name change. This is sobering. I don't send my PCs to be repaired by anyone else other than myself, so I don't have to worry much. However, I'm not sure if I will buy parts from that store anymore.

Who take their computer to CompUSA to get fixed? Your asking for trouble by taking your PC to any of the big name places. ESPECIALLY ONE THAT CLOSES MORE STORES THAN THEY OPEN!

I think that anyone that reads this blog is not going to have any horror stories since we don't trust computer repair stores in the first place. This is Maximum PC, we fix our own comps.

True that. We may fix other peoples computers and ours, but, never take it to ComUSA or GEEKSquad. WE are more advanced than the readers of other computer magazines :)
