Redownloads No Longer Free on iPhone App Store
Posted 06/02/09 at 09:23:54 AM by Paul Lilly
iPhone users beware. According to TheiPhoneBlog.com, some users running the 3.0 Beta firmware are finding out they're unable to redownload already purchased apps without paying for them all over again.
"You've already purchased this. You can redownload it for free on your computer, or tap Buy to buy it again," a message reads when attempting to redownload.
Coming to the iPhone (and available in the 3.0 Beta firmware) is the ability to manage and switch between iTunes accounts. Charging for redownloads might be the company's way of ensuring purchased content doesn't get shared between accounts. For example, logging into your account on a co-workers iPhone and 'redownloading' an app that was never purchased for it.
We'd like to know how you feel about this potential new policy. Post your comments below!

... Valve suddenly saying that you can't redownload your games. Once they're downloaded, you have to buy them again (but they don't have a problem with you backing it up).
Now imagine Steam's customer base dropping.

Wow, that fucking sucks. Atleast I don't ever delete my apps from my PC. I'll admit I'm using a jailbroken iphone, but at least I don't pirate apps.

He was totally right and that was the only warning that Iphone owners would ever get.
You got it wrong.

No, Gordon was yelling that all in caps. :)
Still, how can Apple f-up so many people and continue to get away with it? I smell an upcoming rant topic!

prediction: There were be much gnashing of teath and yelling at apple over this.
They will backpeddle and just link apps to accounts and then probably add some bult "reset apps" fee for all-in-one-at-a-time app reloads.

If it works the same way as Ipod apps then I download the apps to Itunes and burn them to disc for savings. When I have to rebuild my Music Collection I have everything backed up including my apps. Just put the apps back into my Itunes Ipod Apps directory and set it to sync with my Ipod and I'm fine. Should work the same way with Iphone apps.
What sucks is that G1 does not have anyway of backing things up that is this easy.

Most G1 apps can be saved to your SD card (and then copied to your PC or wherever via the USB cable) for backup, if you desire. With a rooted phone, ALL apps can be backed up to your SD card.
It's not particularly necessary though, because as I mentioned before your purchased apps are associated with your google account, so you can *always* redownload them as needed--even if you break your phone and have to get a new one. Redownloading everything might be a pain in the ass, but at least you don't have to pay for them again, like the *ahem* cool kids do.
Free from PC

Everyone is so hung up on the fact that you need to buy again, but it clearly states you can get it free on your pc, so just re-download it, and transfer to you iphone.
Yes, free but....

When was the last time n Iphone user actually used a PC or Mac to get apps or songs? Aren't they ALWAYS gonna use wifi or 3g or edge? Can the average apple user actually comprehend this fathomably easy to get message? Will I get flamed for tis comment? Check out the reply post to find out!

Unbelieveable....see how costly it is to be trendy? Not only does your "cool" lightsaber application require you to buy, but buy after it somehow gets removed from your phone (due to iTunes sync issues or sending back to the factory, and getting it replaced, hard drive gets wiped for any reason, or something along these lines) you also have to PAY for the faults of technology...Apple is not as credible as their fans make them out to be.
I don't like Microsoft, I associate with it.

Great I've already had all my apps disappear at least once due to itunes sync awesomes.
Is iphone app piracy really so rampant that this pain in the ass is justified?

I'm not an iPhone owner, so this policy doesn't really effect me. Google's policy with android apps (where your purchase is tied to your google account, and you can redownload as needed) seems very logical and sensible to me.
BTW, does the message really read, "or TAB Buy to BUT it again"? Because if so, that shit is hilarious!
