Razer's True 7.1 Tiamat Gaming Headset Delayed... Again
Bad news for surround-sound gaming headset fans; Razer's Tiamat 7.1 headset was already delayed from its original 2011 launch, and now it's been delayed yet again. The company recently announced that its January rescheduling was a little too ambitious and now says that the cans will ship next month, instead. (Maybe the name should have been a warning: Wikipedia says Tiamat was "the monstrous embodiment of primordial chaos" in Babylonian mythology.) By way of apology, the company's offering some free Razer swag to early buyers.
"We feel our relentless pursuit of quality, and our refusal to ship a 'good enough' product will pay off when you plug in your pair and hear them for the first time," Razer wrote on its website. "We do not take delays lightly, and you can bet your ass we are busting ours to make this product perfect." If you add your name to the Tiamat's notification list, Razer will send you a coupon code for a free Razer t-shirt and flask, which you can redeem when the Tiamat goes up for sale.
A quick refresher: Razer pegs the Tiamat as a true 7.1 headset thanks to its 10 individual positional drivers, which it claims is a "world's first." Other gaming headsets use simulated surround sound. Are you thinking of picking one up?

Does the microphone work? I spent a lot on the Meglodon phones and the microphone is crap. They're awesome otherwise and the sound is incredible, but for their cost you'd think the microphone would be decent. Nope. My cheap Logitech headset has a better microphone and I have to switch when I play online games with friends because they always complain they can't hear me. Even after spending hours messing around with settings it still doesn't work well.
If you don't play online games much then I would grab them. Otherwise I'd wait for reviews to make sure the microphone doesn't suffer the same problems.
Oh, and the Meglodons are so comfortable you can wear them for hours with no discomfort. I assume these have the same soft material. I wear glasses and they fit just fine and I can play all day marathons on the weekend with no sore ears.
How many games really utilize 7.1? I don't know the specifics but doesn't a game have to be written with 7.1 support for the headphones to really matter? The Meglodons I have are virtual 7.1 and I don't know of a single game I have that sounds better in 7.1. In fact, most games sound worse in surround sound mode, everything gives echo effects or sound distant or muffled, etc. I play everything in standard headphone mode and it actually sounds better. I've tried everything from BF3, Skyrim, WoW, SWTOR, and so on. Nothing seems to really utilize 7.1.

I for one say that if reviews are good im defiantly in for one. i have 7.1 onkyo surround receiver with infinity separates and 2 10 inch subs, the g930's headphones and the recon3d champion but if these sound as good as they look $179 would be well worth it if that is the real price

Honestly surround sound through headphones is great, but research has shown that using sound processing techniques such as Dolby Headphone work BETTER than using multiple physical drivers. The reason is that there isn't enough space even with large headphones for the effect to be reliable and precise.
I have Dolby Headphone on my sound card and I can fully recommend it. Great for gaming and music is also better because the headphones just disapear and you can get lost in the music.

I just jumped though a mess of hoops to get a 5.1 set of 'phones. It's like pure luck to find anything that plugs into a sound card properly for the last couple of years: Everything is really just stereo, or some weird USB-only device that's got jack-all to do with the Sound Blaster you paid for. But my LTBs, and the Ultra I just replaced them with do the trick. These Razers? What's the price, again?
Gimmick? I take it you've never had 5.1 *speakers*, ether …

If you're going to address a comment to someone, why not actually reply TO that post?
For your information, 5.1 speakers are far different from 5.1 headphones. There is simply not enough space within the cups for your ear to effectively differentiate the directions that sound can come from. The end result is a blurry, muddy experience that can't hold a candle to actual 5.1 surround. Do every audiophile out there a favour, and go look for a legitimate article that states 5.1 headphones are superior to open stereo cans. I won't be holding my breath.

Surround sound headphones are a gimmick, ask any respectable audio forum. Invest in a good pair of open stereo headphones if you want positioning in games.

Not planning on it. Got my logitech G930s, and they do a fantastic job. Besides the Das Pro S, best purchase for my computer ever.

At $179.99, it had better be a first. I am tempted all the same - love Razer gear.

"Tiamat was 'the monstrous embodiment of primordial chaos'"
Lies! Filthy lies, I tells ya!
Tiamat is the Chromatic Dragon Queen. It says so right here *taptap* in my 1st Ed. Monster Manual! And we ALL know that volume is the penultimate academic authority on ancient mythologies, right? =oP

Or the fact that 7.1 in a headset (Headphones if you like getting your money's worth and not ripped off) is completely pointless?

I'll still hold to the fact that surround sound headphones are gimmicky. Creating spacial sound when the drivers are an inch away just isn't the same for me.
I'm more curious to the fact of why these are 7.1 Is the bass driver only in 1 ear or something?
