Wasn't there a rumor about an XBox console with built in Kinect? That would make much more sense.

It would, but they'd still have to make separate Kinects for the PC. How much would a built in Kinect affect the price of the Xbox? There's probably some other related issues with positioning the motion sensor just right. I know from owning a Wii that you have to put it in a certain area so it accurately detects motion.

Pfft, more junk. Will the new consoles do native 1080p @ 40FPS minimum, never mind 60? Will they have spacious non-boxy large levels and textures that are better than the PSX? Will the draw distance be longer than 1 foot? Will shooters last longer than 4hrs? No, well then its pointless. Again. Decent consoles and console games dies with the PS2/ OG Xbox. Then greed kicked in.

So why would anyone agree to their new 2-year contracts for an old Xbox? I called this prediction out in that article as well. People sign up just to find out that before the contract is up the newest Xbox comes out. Fantastic!

Prediction: the next gen after the 720 is going to be the 1080? Just a shot in the dark, not sure where I came up with that one...

"or the 'new Xbox' (to borrow a page from Apple) if you wish"

It's funny you comment on that because I was thinking the same thing recently about the iPad. So what do they call the next iPad? The newest iPad?

"the new iPad 2" :)

it has to be at least four times as powerful as the current xbox to even have a noticeable graphic improvement. i'll pass.

Why the hell are we talking about f'ing consoles in a damn PC mag? A supposedly "Maximum" PC mag? Consoles are for the retarded who can't handle a PC and use a Mac.

No, consoles are for people who don't want to waste a couple of grand on a computer just to play some games, and for people who don't want to be sitting at a desk to do so. Having family over? Good luck getting them to gather around your dorky computer when they can converge in the living room and play something together.

See? Other people can be condescending and stupid too.

"and for people who don't want to be sitting at a desk to do so."

It's called wireless accessories...

Does it really matter? If you don't want to read it then don't. You clicked on the link and now are complaining? Since I've been reading this magazine (it's been 6 years) they've always had non-PC related tech articles.

Well if you think about it, a console is just a purpose specific PC. You could hardly do anything on older consoles EXCEPT play games, but their funcionality has expanded a lot since even Sega-CD came out. Then, you could not only play games, but they were in a new format and listen to music. No I'm not saying I liked Sega CD... just that it was one of the first early adopters that advanced what a console could do. Stop hating on consoles. They used to be all there was for any legitimate gaming purposes, with PC gaming being only for those with ~$2000 to blow on a decent PC. Now, consoles are never likely to catch up to a PC since they can't keep up with the hardware changes and there's no way for them to actually get ahead of the PC market. If I had an extra grand to blow, I'd get all three consoles, the games I want for them, and a decent tv to play them on. Instead, I chose to build a new gaming PC, hence my presence here. I'm a PC nut.
BTW your logic is heavily flawed... many people just prefer the console experience, and up until late in the PS2 life cycle, I was one AND owned a gaming PC too.

I didn't buy the 360 and am not really sure I'll buy the next one either. Actually, didn't even buy the PS3. I was swayed by a few titles for each, but couldn't rationalize spending $300-$400 for a system, just for a handful of games I might enjoy. With them being $199 now (cheaper on sale or with bundles), I may get both and play some of the ones I missed.
I am not an early adopter for consoles anymore. I was tempted with the PS3, but once they cut out backwards compatability... I said no f'in way. Will probably go hunt some legacy systems down before too long for my kids to enjoy.

I agree, that a lot of money to put out for something that doesn't do much beside play games, I can get a new cpu or gpu cheaper than it const to get a console and still have enough to buy some good pc games. PLus my pc will be able to do all that a console can and more. I can write an essay on a xbox and I cant edit java code on a ps3.

Im excited about it.... but how much difference can it really be? At this point, the only way things get more realistic looking is if I'm actually being physically assaulted by enemies in real life, at which point I probably wont want to play anymore

how much difference can it be from what? the xbox 360? Because if you think the graphics on the 360 are "realistic" looking.. and cant imagine it getting any better.. you sir need to check out what a good graphics card or two in a PC can do. makes the 360 look HORRIBLE!

Even if I have to wait a year, I'm still going to wait...

The ONLY thing that might tempt me is to give the Halo games a try, but hey... I've waited this long, what's another 18 months?

I still doubt any future consoles in the Xbox line will ever beat the variety of features in the original Xbox. That thing was virtually a straight-up PC in a console package, and top of the line too. You couldn't beat it in any department but DVD playback and price.

And maybe the controller. Accursed Duke.
