Hate to break it to you but the PlayStation 4 is not better because its touting a 8 core processor, specially seeing that its only clocked at 1.6Ghz. Its only better because its a better value and that's it.. This processor will be irreverent at launch and even if the games written for the PS4 are strictly dependent on multiple cores theirs not a chance in hell Crysis 3 will look anything like what it dose on a PC specially all all maxed out... the top graphics card out right now can barely crack 30FPS and that video card is almost 15" long...LOL.. As a Game console computer tech I will inform you the most consoles have a dedicated GPU chip soldered directly to the motherboard... you think their going to get GTX 680 performance on this type of implementation your crazy... also to note that AMD is the company building the CPU and the GPU for the PS4 and their hardware pales in comparison to Intel's and Nvidia's... So yes PS4 buyers will get a great system for the money but hate to say its hardware is already obsolete in comparison to a gaming PC and it has not even launched yet.. Games however will all be the same just graphically toned down so your precious console doesn't over heat and explode.. OH wait it might happen anyways.. RROD..YLOD familiar..LOL

As a PC gamer I have to say PlayStation 4 is not as bad as some of you are making out to be. No it will not play Crysis 3 Maxed out in all its glory, but it will however have over a 100 game that will be optimized to play on it over the next 8 years. This is not something us PC gamers can say about our 2000+ dollar PC's, unless you upgrade along the way and in most cases upgrades cost more than a console. also a consoles OS is probably 1/20 as demanding as say any Windows OS, witch dose equate to more resources for the games.. So even if the PlayStation 4 costs 500 buks witch it wont you defiantly cant deny the value here..
As for the hardware for the PlayStation 4 I have to say a 1.6GHz 8 core processor screams more next gen tablet than it dose next gen game console. This is in my opinion is a step back from the previous 3.2Ghz Cell processor.. But something tells me this is what developers wanted.. their is no question developers are getting better in writing mulch-threaded programs and games. This is the future with out question and believe it or not PC gamers this will only benefit us.. Remember games now days are mostly written for Consoles and spruced up for PC (you can thank pirates for this). why... well console games make money and PC games don't (except for the occasional MMO). So just think if these games run at 60FPS at 1080P on a multi-Core Processor that's clocked at 1.6Ghz just think how they will run on our bad ass PC's.. In the end we all benefit, console gamers get a system that is definitely a compromise at a good price and is good for 8 years and Us PC gamers sit back and benefit as the evaluation of developing games progresses..

First Sony needs to make a good game for it 50.00+ then it needs to sell me the console to play the game 430.00........

Hey I can play Planetside 2 for FREE!!! The PS4 won't be able to run it even!
Planetside 2 is made by SONY TOO LOL!!!

You needs some really decent well thought out games in order to sell the system or people will just goto PC. You need top QUALITY EXCLUSIVE NOT STUPID ASS FPS you need Dark souls quality games you need to break the FPS mode. Otherwise this system will just be PS Vita. Those games get stole all the time...

myh1tlist101

What about Infamous, Ratchet and Clank, and God of War. Oh also the new team ICO game. The PS3 has more exclusives than Xbox. Just not more than PC. Honestly though ever since switching to PC I miss my 1 on 1 fighters. That's why I plan to build a MAME cabinet. My dad agreed to it!

I don't understand why there are so many people gawking over these specs. We all know how this goes: the PS4 will launch to much fanfare, after which PS4 users will start raving about how much better their little black box is compared to an actual computer. However, what they fail to realize is that their precious little black box will be outdated several months after its release. So, PS4 lovers, enjoy it now while it lasts, but don't cry when you are sitting in the same position as you are now a year after launch. Computer technology advances at a lightning-fast pace, and custom-built rigs, not consoles, will always be on top.

avatar

kiaghi7

Well based upon the specifications given thus far... The PS4 is already obsolete...

It's supposed to be running a "custom" CPU chip from AMD (cusom is used instead of saying "obsolete"), that is approximated in the 2.0-2.5Ghz range. It's primary power is derived from eight cores, which is great and wonderful, welcome to 2010 when that was considered "new"... The only reason ever more cores aren't constantly added to ever more PC CPU's is that there is very little software necessitating them.

I will grant that advantage to a console where the platform will be singularly unified and all programs written for it will have the same set of criteria to meet as a result of that. Therefore multi-core programs will be a given, and take better advantage of the cores than many PC programs that are often written to the least-common-denominator.

The PS4's GPU is a "custom" version of a ATi/AMD 7870, which isn't a bad card by any means, but it's not even remotely close to bleeding edge technology... It's not ancient, being from early of 2012, but even when it came out it wasn't a "world beater", it's a mid-range card and that's where it has EXCELLENT bank-for-your-buck features...

But it can't even hold a candle to the GTX580, much less the GTX680, and sure as hell not even worth comparing to the Titan, even its own brethren in the 7900 series put it to shame, as well they should...

But anyone touting PS4's specs as "awesome" should be slapped and spend a little time looking up what those specs really mean.

Frankly, the PS4 is nothing more than a mid-range gaming computer... Aside from running a Windows OS (which I'm sure someone will hack it to do), it's just a lobotomized PC with a Sony Playstation emblem.

I'm glad to see that Sony switched over to a X86 chip. The one problem i have with the switch is the fact that it would be totally incompatible with previous PS1 2 3 games.
Cloud emulation for PS3 and lower LOL! The cable companies are gonna be laughing to the bank when people start going over data caps.

avatar

Why are ppl worried about the speed of the cpu? Did Sony say they were gonna go from a custom OS of thier own to windows? did I miss that? I think I remeber the point of thier own OS amoung other things was it was much faster at playing games than An OS like windows. Alot of ppl don't like Sony but I think they thought about what kind of cpu they were gonna need for the system they wanted to build as far as speed and cores, not sure what some of you ppl thought you were gonna do on this system besides play the games coded for it.

avatar

Wily_One

Anyone else see the irony of a game console using a CPU called "Jaguar"?

avatar

jgottberg

Referring to the debacle that was the Atari Jaguar circa 1993? Full of promise and short on delivering... severely short. That's my memory :)

avatar

Wily_One

Yup, that sums it up nicely. :)

avatar

wumpus

Did AMD ever ship bobcat? I can't remember a single mention of it past AMD's breathless announcement. It comes down to AMD's cats vs. A15 if you want small, fast, cool (low power) cores. Also back when the big boys went out-of-order (MIPS, Alpha, Power, not sure about Intel's P6), every single one of them had significant delays on their first try. Sony might have simply assumed a similar thing and avoided A15.

You run out of names sometimes. I remember being amused at some PowerPC chip names being the same as some famous 16 pin 4 gate chips.

avatar

Electrik

I'll bet Ballmer rolled over and piddled on himself when he saw these specs. But then, Sony hasen't shown one because they haven't built one yet. They're trying to one-up MS. Should be an interesting year.

Just to clear things up within the community, the douchebag troll known as Wintel is creating multiple accounts similar to other members of MaxPC.

He going by the aliases of Wintel, Engelssstaub, Ledoubleu, Neufeldtl2002 and has coppied my own, xxSINSOFWARXx.

Once again wintel, you fail... at life.

avatar

Ledoubleu

I haven't seen any post similar to my handle! I was having fun earlier today with a couple of spam messages but not trying to troll if that's what you saw!

avatar

Neufeldt2002

Add compguytwacy to the list of aliases he/she is now using.

avatar

jgottberg

I've noticed. The trolling was bad enough and ALMOST bordered on so-stupid-it's-funny... But the account creation crap is over a line.

My personal theory is that Wintel is really "Silencer" posing as this Wintel guy. At least it's something that low-life would have done.

avatar

MaximumMike

Maximum PC really should ban his IP address. I tolerated his trolling because as you said it was 'so-stupid-it's-funny', but impersonating other users is definitely over the line.

avatar

jgottberg

Exactly. Even though he was trolling, he still has the same freedom to speech as we do but creating accounts and impersonating people is just pathetic.

avatar

TrollBot5000

check the Lian Li post for my thoughts on it and you'll see I was also bestowed the highest honor of having my own clone account on the 1300 dollar chromebook article. Best strategy is to just ignore that douche.

Looks like the next Playstation is a PC.

avatar

etsugua

So it finally happened - the console has died and been replaced by the PC! LOL!

Nice to see Sony using an x86 chip. Now all we need to do is install linux on it and Steam for linux and... wait a sec. I see what's happening here! Sony is hedging it's bets and has secretly created it's own SteamBox!

avatar

wumpus

Linux works on the ARM (and just about everything else, including powerpc (IBM is big in linux)). Trying to port to Cell would be a nightmare, but everything else is nearly in place and could get done quickly.

On the other hand, running it requires either illegally breaking the Device Crippling System (recommended, but makes hosting the distribution files dangerous), or using non-patched systems (that won't play any games) to avoid having Sony cripple your system (assuming Sony will let you run any non-Sony branded software on your system, which is a poor bet).

avatar

MaximumMike

A couple thoughts. This sounds like a completely awesome system, but there's no way I'm letting Sony into my living room. Also, why are they like a decade behind on bluetooth technology, especially with all the smartphone integration they're touting? That's kind of a let down. I think it will eventually be a Nintendo Wii U for me. I don't care that it will be blown away by the PS4 and the Xbox. I'm not much of a console gamer anyway. And when I do game on consoles I like Mario. What can I say, I grew up on it.

avatar

hades_2100

Bluetooth? The PS3 has Bluetooth controllers and headsets, what more do you want?

avatar

Caboose

The current BT version is 4.1. The PS4 has BT 2.1.

My car has a more up to date version of bluetooth than the PS4.

avatar

TrollBot5000

Yeah that is a bit mind boggling that Sony would build it's latest gen console with obsolete BT technology. now it's going to bother me until I find out their reasoning behind it.

avatar

Caboose

They'll say it interferes with rumble or some lame excuse like last time.

avatar

MaximumMike

Ummm.... interoperability between the console and handheld devices as Sony is suggesting. And for that you'll need the bandwidth that comes with more current bluetooth technology. This is a next generation console after all. So, lets try to expand our vision beyond yelling "you just got pwned" into a bluetooth headset.

avatar

captainjack

Okay discussion time, I know the processor is lackluster but does it really need to be better? How CPU intensive are console games? Obviously Sony thinks that the lions share of the money should go to GPU and RAM. I know that my CPU never really gets stressed playing games, will there be issues with the AMD proc? Inquiring Captainjack's want to know

avatar

Renegade Knight

Read some benchmarks testing this on another site. CPUs aren't critical like they used to be but they do help smooth out graphical performance and they do make a difference. You don't need the top end, but most sites with build your own PC articles like this do tend to recommend the right CPUs and they aren't the bottom end ones.

avatar

Torqumada286

D3 is a selling point on a new console? It will be 18 or so months old when the P4 finally comes out.

avatar

jgottberg

I'm not sure why some people are so concerned about backward compatibility... Once you buy the new console, it doesn't mean you trade in your old one, never to be seen again. And if I'm buying a new console, it would probably be months, if not years before I ever got the itch to go back and play old games.

avatar

vrmlbasic

I don't want to have to have 2+ systems hooked up to play both new and older games that are designed for the same console line.

This was a deal-breaker for me with the PS3 as the PS2 was very difficult to connect to my HD setup whereas the PS3 was easy since it had HDMI. Had the PS3 allowed me to play PS2 games via an HDMI connection and had provided some graphical improvement (as was the original promise) then I would have gotten one.

W/O that, the PS3 was just a junky PC with lackluster online gaming capabilities, which is why I still do not have one.

avatar

Damnlogin

The first batch of PS3s shipped with the emotion engine(o whatever its called) from the PS2. Sucks that they removed it...but then again it did hike up the cost by a fair margin. That's probably how they managed to drop the price from around $600 at launch to $400~.

avatar

jgottberg

Same console line? They are made by the same company but that doesn't mean they should be compatible does it? At some point backward compatibility becomes a burden to console designers. Instead of devoting time to maximizing the hardware for current games, they are saddled trying to emulate older games on current hardware. My current PS3 cost me $400 almost 7 years ago. I'd say it was a great return on investment. I'm ready to spend the same if I get at least 5 years from it.

I should add that I do get the multiple consoles eating up TV inputs. And like you said, back in 2000 when the PS2 came out, that was an issue. These days almost all HDTV's have at LEAST 2 HDMI connections, if not 4 plus a myriad of component and composite connections.

avatar

vrmlbasic

Sony initially gave us backwards compatibility, they promised us backwards compatibility, and then they ripped it out & told us to either use our old PS2s--losing the promised convenience and graphical improvements--or rebuy PS3 compatible versions of select PS2 games from PSN. I can play my PS2 through a composite->usb->PC->monitor setup, but it looks like crap & Sony promised that I would not have to.

BTW, when all the consoles are under the same name (ie:PlayStation) then yes, every new version should be backwards compatible with the previous versions. Since this PS4 is just a PC in a fancy box, and PCs have had pretty good PS2 emulation for years, it should be easy for Sony to give us emulation as their excuse about emulation being difficult to do with Cell & adding on the physical chips of the emotion engine (?!!) was too costly (and stupid).

Wintel, you are a uninformed console tool. I doubt the ps4 will make me jealeous. I have more processing poer at stock than this cpu would have if overclocked, not to mention video, and memory power in my machine. The only thing this is good for is playing games, period. I can also play AAA games, also, srf internet, movies, type a report in word, email, print, manage my itunes library, ipad, and ipod. Should i go on? You are a tool, and need to stfu, and go play with your toy, while us grown ups go on our pc's and actually, you should be happy us pc enthusiasts are out here, were it not for us constantly overclocking our machines, and testing the limits, you would have no idea what real graphic looked like, so would be content eith you 640*480 resolution. We pused the envelope, and consoles, as usual, are sucking hind tit trying to catch up, and usurp the king of the mountain. Sorry to say, the PS4, Xbox whatever, WiiU, are all machines i built or had 5-8 years ago. Oooh rabble rabble, 1.6 ghz? Seriouslly, you're geeked about that??

avatar

captainjack

actually wintel is just a tool. He posts inflammatory short sentences so that people like you get all worked up and waste their time writing rebuttals that he never actually reads. It's well documented on this site, he just gets a kick out of it

That was one long ass incomplete announcement event - especially since they didn't even show the box. Too much game developer dog & pony.
Too much talking in general. Not enough meat...

Social media connectivity is over-rated and it would appear that is what they are trying to use to drive excitement. Bad move.

And all the prepared, teleprompter reading ruined the delivery.
Reminded me of Obama but sloppier.
What would Steve Jobs say about this Busch-league roll-out?

Meh

avatar

wolfing

Meh. I like the controller though, but the whole 'social media' thing is actually something that drives me away from the console. Guess I won't be getting a new console any time soon (PS3 doing just fine, and if it breaks, I can probably get a new one for cheapz). Besides, Steam and Kickstarter have made my PC the gaming platform of choice. After paying $10-$30 for great games in PC, I don't see myself paying $60+ for console games that are pretty much the same thing over and over (shooters mainly), especially if the rumors are true that the new consoles won't let you play pre-owned games.

This makes me hope that the next Xbox has the same specs and is virtually compatible. Not at the user level but from a Developer point of view.

It would help drive development costs down a lot if you can basically run the same engine with the same base code on two consoles. Of course I guess that DRM would be different therefore a release XBOX build would not run on PS4 and so on.

If devs could put more into games and less into cross compatibility we would all win. The core user would base his choice on hardware (controller...), value, 1st party exclusives and app offer.

avatar

steve25

Social media sharing options are going to rock this console with more and more people active on Twitter and Facebook now a days. With features like screen sharing and compatibility to play with players of PS App will surely make it more popular than its predessors.

Hopefully this will bring AMD back.

Evelyn. if you, thought Rachel`s bl0g is astonishing... last thursday I bought themselves a Audi Quattro from making $8125 this last four weeks and just a little over $10k lass month. this is really the most financially rewarding Ive ever done. I began this four months/ago and almost immediately began to bring in more than $78... per-hour. I follow the instructions here........ BIT40.com

avatar

devin3627

basicly, videogame companies and artists demanded 8gb instead of 4gb because the 512mb in the xbox 360 was severely limiting.

avatar

Larzs1983

Everything is not about speed such as if I had a 450+hp small block and not a good means of putting the rubber to the road so to speak then what good is all that power? So to that means using a proc that is geared right such as one or two doing vid sharing and the other cpu's running the game etc etc it makes sense. But the 1.6ghz is the early mod so when everything comes to be it might be 2.2+ and when u take that with a damn good gpu lets call this the tranny then u will have something that will hook up with the track and the 8gigs of ram being the tires should have a quick means of gaming.
