A lot of energy must be invested in such a cleaning activity, it was such a mess! And good commercial cleaning supplies :) As I know, and hopefully I'm well informed, in Feng Shui it is said that order without helps order within. In other words, order in the room helps one put his thoughts together and work efficiently.

This might sound geeky, but I'd love to work in a big lab, full of stuff that is all over the place, as it gives you the feeling that what is going on there, what is being studied, is far more important than the looks of the place. Of course, chaos can sometimes slow you down, but I can accept order at certain intervals:)) Use some commercial cleaning supplies, labeled boxes and shelves, a vacuum cleaner.. yeah, I can do that too:)

It's funny seeing these photos. It seemed like just yesterday that I was reading the article about "hey check out how much bigger our new lab is! We've got so much room now!"

Looks like "Bring Your Parents to Work" day is around the corner.

I'd hate to see your bedrooms......lol ( as i tell my kid the same thing)

The clean lab photo doesn't look clean at all. You still have too much stuff on your desks.

It's the often overlooked simple things that give the

most profound "AH-HAAA" moments.  For me it was the

"Supersize Send To" tip.  How could I have ever overlooked

such a thing?

I found "how to build a silent pc" most helpful in setting up my HTPC.  I had previously run HDMI, audio and USB cables through the wall from my primary PC, but all of the audio switching and monitor duplicating was a pain in the butt, so I decided to build a dedicated living room pc.  The suggestions for noise reduction were helpful in making this rig acceptable to the rest of the family.

I appreciated "Store Everthing!" published on January 2010. It's really easy to ensure data is backed up a hard drive failure should never be a surprise nor a disaster and freenas (or any other nas software) can bring to life a lot of older equipment kept in the basement collecting dust!

You know its MPC when there is a funnel on your desk.

avatar

Mosher

Why don't you guys use all those rigs for your MPC folding @ Home group, maybe you'll get to the top like that!

Holding a contest (or random drawing) with the smexy dream machine as a prize could work!

But good lord, I'd be all hot and bothered in the presence of so much nerd gear of such high caliber.

avatar

AudioCraZ

Damn, i would of gladly came down from from Kern County and helped clean that place up, for free! I would even do a strip search before and after, especially said officer was a cute female nerd.... (a mans got standards) as long as my wife didn't find out.. LOL

avatar

jameswilkers

hey if you guys don't need some of those spare parts just send them my way. I am needing to get a home server up and going and I'm sure collectively I could build a few systems with what you guys have just laying around the office. LOL Really enjoy the online articles guys.

I did "the big clean out" about a year ago. I put all my spare parts in seperate marked bins in the garage. I found I had enough spare stuff to help a few family members build some nice rigs. I also found that I had bought stuff like cables and other stuff that I already had. I think what we all need is a big swap meet where we can all swap extra stuff with each other :-)

My work bench looks like the first pic and it might look unorganized, but I’ve found that it’s a lot easier to grab what I need instead of running around trying to find where I organized it to, and the only way it stays organized is to not work on anything. Two weeks at the most, and it will look like it did :)

That is really unorganized and messy. Good thing it is getting cleaned.

The stuff not used should just be sold or taken home by employees to avoid this kind of thing--or at least stored *neatly* in a warehouse until it is all figured out.

I love used computer. Great for spear parts

Stop whining that you want stuff, everyone wants the gear. Same thing happens on Facebook when Zune says "like" this post, and we will choose someone to receive a month of Zune Pass free. Then everyone and everyone's mother whine and whine, stating they would love the Zune Pass, that they need the Zune Pass, that their's just expired and that they are broke and need one. It is annoying.

avatar

roleki

... especially computers.  I've learned from painful experience, that if you give somebody a computer you have lying around, no matter how well you had it tuned before turning it over to them, you will be on the hook for a lifetime of tech support.   Imagine then, shipping a 70-pound water-cooled machine to some random bloke.   Eh, nah.

Thanks guys! My wife is always making remarks about the clutter in my study and work area. Now I can show her an example of REAL clutter and silence her nagging. :-)

I know what you should do with that Dream Machine, give it to me. I didn't say sell it, I said give it to me. I'll take anything you guys are willing to throw my way.

I'm moving into our first house on the 25th of this month and that Dream Machine would make a great house warming gift.

You  can send me that NZXT Phantom case collecting dust in the 3rd photo down...I mean since it would help give you guys more room :)

avatar

SselluosS

I would ask for a full tower. Like the picture where they are stacking cases up...

CM ATCS 840's ftw. Maybe they got a Corsair 800D lying around somewhere also.

avatar

I Jedi

I lawrd... I surely do wish I had that setup.... A geek's dream.

How about some of these workbenches: http://www.technibble.com/a-peek-at-other-computer-technicians-workbenches-2/

avatar

I would be in heaven if i had that much computer hardware to play with!

avatar

I thought that was Gordon's desk for a moment

Then I realized it was the junk pile..... :) Our old Techcenter used to look like that fist shot.

"discussing what exactly we should do with our beastly Dream Machine..."

I can help with that. Just send it my way and everyone wins :D!

avatar

iDaeth

lol, that would be awesome.  They shouuld just have a giveaway of the machine every year after they announce it.  Would make the most sense . . .
