PC Gamers Left Out Of EA's Massive $1.6m Battlefield 3 Tournament
It’s fairly safe to say that PC gamers are getting SUPER MEGA PUMPED over the release of the upcoming Battlefield 3. Battlefield’s one of those games that was born on the PC and thrives on the PC; both AMD and Nvidia have released drivers in the past few days to let PC gamers get in on shooting fun. To get folks even more excited, EA and Virgin Gaming have teamed up to unleash a massive BF3 contest in 2012 with over $1.6 million in cash and prizes. Better start warming up that mouse! …Oh, wait. It’s console only.
“The biggest, most realistic, room-shaking FPS ever demands a tournament that will always be remembered,” the contest’s sign-up page brags. “That's why Virgin Gaming, and EA DICE have come together to bring you an online competition you'll be telling your grandkids about. So strap on your boots and check your magazine—when the spoils of war are this rich, you can bet things are gonna get messy.”
Then, um, it includes links for PS3 and Xbox 360 owners to register in the tourney. This is “THE LARGEST ONLINE CONSOLE GAME TOURNAMENT EVER,” you see. Sorry to break it to you, long time PC Battlefield fans. Oh yeah, you won't be able to get it through Steam, either.
While you’re recovering from that kick in the teeth, consider the words of GameStop President Tony Bartel. In an interview with IndustryGamers that mainly revolved around digital services and the future of cloud gaming, Bartel offered up this interesting tidbit: “We continue to believe that the console is a strong platform and will continue to be the gold standard.” That’s right, folks, consoles are apparently considered the gold standard. Maybe that’s why there’s no BF3 tournament for us lowly PC types?

Maybe they didn't want to embarrass the console players by showing how much better a FPS is on a PC. Any FPS I've tried on PS3 or XBox is just akward and not precise enough when trying to aim with a stick.
Yeah, it does suck, but just remember how much more stuff PC gamers are getting like more players per map and better graphics.

Oh well. PC gamers can handle and set up their own tournaments without the help of the developer or publisher. Consoles have to have their hands held apparently.
No biggie.

The other day my son's friend was here and saw me playing the Lord of The Ring survival map in L4D2. He stood in awe as the battlefield was covered in zombie parts, and explosions rocked the battlefield... all the while epic music from the movie played in the background.
He said, "Wow, what game is this?"
I said, "Left 4 Dead 2."
He said, "Really?"
I said, "Yep".
He said, "Cool."
Poor kid, his parent only ever gave him an xbox 360 and he thought that's all there was to gaming.

No worries bro.
Watch as EA is left behind as games like Starcraft 2, DotA2 and LoL solidfy themselves as the gold standard for e-sports.
Throw all the money in the world behind console games all you want, but they will never gather the return on investment to make them viable for e-sports.
Its just sunk marketing dollars like that Call of Duty XP event.

So I guess I WON'T be needing an Origin account afterall. Cool. This WAS the first EA game I WAS going to buy in quite a while. Too bad, so sad.

Why can't I purchase the game in Us dollars vs the Euros it is showing me on origin...I'm in the Caribbean (hope that it doesn't mean non-Us buyers are automatically European) and the exchange rate is killer if I have to buy a Euro version. Don't have this prob with Steam
ps.... PC is my 1st choice but won't fight the consoles...

You do know what a download is right? Its not "adding someone to your contact/friends list". In case you were unsure.
PC trumps consoles, hands down, in terms of gameplay, graphics, and sheer player numbers.

sadly not in sales, and prob not in player number. it's like the sale of Audio-Technica headphone vs Sony headphones(or even those Dr.Dre headphones). people aren't very good at picking out the best product when effort is involved.

SWEET! I'm still in! I got the early access(THANK YOU MEDAL OF HONOR!) beta last night, it's an okay game. I was never gonna get this on PC anyway, PC doesn't have anything I like playing......well except for StarCraft 2. Was thinkin about Diablo 3 but since I can't play it in the field or while deployed....yeah don't care about it anymore.
Consoles are far from being a graphics potential "gold standard", that I admit....they ARE the "gold standard" when it comes to sales. You can't argue with the bottom line....MONEY. If they DIDN'T make a PC version they would only lose maybe 800,000 potential copies sold(and about 2 million pirated copies) whereas consoles will sell 30+million copies.
Either way BF3 is still gonna get destroyed in sales by MW3.

Its true, even though I personally think BF3 is the "better" game.....
....even though 95% of the people here have written it off as a "crappy console port" or whatever.

however, considering EA is pulling a lot of crap on PC Gamers, less and less people are planning to purchase this game on the PC. I question if EA is trying to actually kill PC gaming as it is, I'm really questioning if I want to use the only money I get from selling my PSP to buy Battlefield 3, Rage, or Skyrim.

Consoles are far from being the "gold standard". Even a mediocre gaming PC can rip an XBox 360 apart, and the PS3 is even worse. Unless they seriously pump up the next generation of gaming systems (though this generation has been going on for about a million years now), PCs will remain the King of the Hill. These games are created on PC, tested on PC, and built around PC graphics, then scaled down to work on underpowered consoles.

I don't care if it ends up being the "Mother of All Games." I'm not buying it because of EA's anti-PC policies.

Yes it will always be remembered. Remembered as the reason many people boycotted Battlefield. I for one refuse to ever pleay a game that has snubbed the PC.

They kinda have, but kinda haven't. PC version gets the most players, best visuals, and gameplay experience. Sure we don't get a tourney, but maybe another company will pick up the ball that was dropped.

Wasn't that Shadowrun? I remember there being a game for PC and 360 that was crossplatform.
MMOs are a little different. I've played Phantasy Star Universe on my PC w/my friend on his PS2.

was playing the beta last night on my ps3, it was pretty nice though the controls were a bit strange= did notseem the same as before.
still like the pc version better for control
i think the artical and the comments display the EA view of control of- consoles are given value for programming. so programm for the low denomator and then port to PC
shame that - but they listen to industry hype that pc gaming is dead - due to brick and morter sales and thier hatred (or is it envy ?) of steam
