Pandora's Linux Based Gaming Handheld Now Shipping - Open Source Gaming Goes Portable
In what can only be considered a major victory for the open source gaming scene the fabled Pandora handheld is finally shipping. After almost two years of sneak peeks and disappointing setbacks the first batch of units are finally being massed produced and sent out to paying customers. The end product is the polar opposite of the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP in just about every respect. Rather than trying to make a closed down platform filled with proprietary technologies, the hardware and software architectures are completely open and just begging to be exploited.
The device itself will ship with an ARM Cortex 600Mhz CPU running Linux, with a separate 430Mhz DSP core. That might sound a bit underpowered by today's standards, but the developers assure us this makes it the most powerful dedicated gaming handheld on the market. The display features a resolution of 800x480 and its storage needs will be covered off by two SDHC memory card slots.
Anyone interested in buying from the first batch shown above currently has to make their request at gp2xorders@gmail.com, but we expect a proper store page will be in place by the time they reach the second run. The hardware is currently priced around $330 not including taxes or shipping, but we have a hunch you'll probably make that up pretty quick in free games.
It remains to be seen if this can be a serious contender in the handheld gaming space, but it's likely to gain popularity quick with those who are getting increasing frustrated trying to crack DS and PSP firmware.

Thanks Apple.... you made a generation of people who only care what the object looks like... not how it performs, or what it does.

Actually, I want to know if it'll do more than just play games. What about music and movies? Wi-fi? Aren't we past the age of single-function devices?
Since it's running Linux I would think any compatible app would run, but you never know.

I have to disagree, here. It isn't the most stunningly advanced industrial design ever made, but I think it looks pretty good, on par with the nintendo DS, which it somewhat resmbles. People who complain about the looks of the thing always confuse me, because it really does look as good as anything can for having the hardware it does.

As it all boils down to money. You wont get any good game that test the system or any good game maker. Why pay to develop a game and make it free?

I love the thought and idea behind this device. However, it could not be anymore obvious that this thing was designed by engineers as it could not be any uglier. It's 2010, people like to hold devices that are sexy.
Even with it's function over form looks I can't wait to get mine in the mail.

I have to agree, It kinda looks like and old laptop circa 1995. But if it can do all they say it can for that price point it's definitely worth a look.
