Palm Pre Drops to $79.99 at Wal-Mart
Trying to compete with a $99 iPhone is no easy task, but it is even harder when you’re more expensive than the competition. Palm was recently able to bridge the gap by reducing the price to $99 on Amazon, but Wal-Mart is obviously looking to sell a boat load of Pre’s by offering them for a mere $79.99 with a two year contract. Unfortunately this price can only be reached using the ever so sneaky mail in rebate approach, but if you’re on the market for a Palm Pre, it looks like Wal-Mart has the price to beat.
It will be interesting to see how pricing changes on the Pixi given how inexpensive its bigger brother now is. Is this the price you’ve been waiting for?

None taken, and I knew someone was bound to point that out. It's just an anomaly in my opinion that they actually sell something cheaper.

Personally, I love this phone and I want one pretty bad. What's holding me back is the fact that the entire playing field is going to be changed pretty soon...
The HTC Hero is coming out in a few weeks, and WinMo 6.5 stuff will be here even sooner than that. Then we have the Pixi, which I won't get just cuz the name is stupid, and Motorola and everybody else getting in on the Android scene before Christmas this year.
How much more is this phone going to drop before the end of the year to still compete with other phones out there? It'll probably be the FREE option to be honest...
Palm is dropping the prices on this thing like crazy right now because they're trying to get rid of inventory. They expected much more to sell, and now Verizon has even scrapped their plans to offer this phone because it didn't turn out to be the blockbuster that it was expected to be.

Actually, Verizon denied rumors that it had decided not to carry the Pre. Jim
Gerace, executive director of media relations at Verizon, told the
E-Commerce Times that the wireless provider will offer the smartphone
in January as planned.

Is it just me, or is Walmart really overpriced when it comes to big electronics?

No offense, but how does that comment apply to this article? This isn't a "big electronic"... And better yet, this article is about how INexpensive Walmart is offering this new technology.
