Nvidia Yanks 196.75 Drivers to Investigate Overheating Reports
There's more trouble brewing in the Nvidia camp, this time over a driver release that may not have been ready for prime time. According to Tom Hernandez over at IncGamers.com, several StarCraft II beta testers have complained tht their videocards have gone belly up after installing Nvidia's 196.75 drivers.
"Some players were blaming the StarCraft II Beta client's latest patch, but a Blizzard Tech Support representative quickly explained the issue is caused by the latest Nvidia 196.75 drivers," Hernandez writes. "Blizzard recommended to uninstall the Nvidia 196.75 drivers, and to downgrade to the previous driver version: 196.21."
Apparently this isn't limited to just StarCraft II. The issue, says Blizzard, relates to the fan control in Nvidia's latest driver, which is leaving videocards prone to overheating while running 3D applications. This has also led to lower than expected framerates, and even motherboard damage, according to reports.

I downloaded the 196.75 drivers to my desktop but didn't install them before reading this article. Lucky for me I guess. ATI is known for faulty drivers and now Nvidia is too. What's going to happen to those nvidia owners who had their cards destroyed? I'm sure Nvida won't cover the loses. Those people will just buy ATI cards from now on. Nvidia just lost more sales.

Yeah I did notice my 9800 GT was hitting 98 C running folding@home. The problem is the fan when set to auto isn't ramping up even when during 100% load. I set the fan to run at 80% with EVGA software, so it's not overheating for me. But definitely loud.

That's why it's Beta, right? No remorse.

my current driver is 196.21 i don't know if this applys to it
but when i was playing bfbc2 i got black textures and random graphic artifacts, it only happened once then i restarted the game and everything worked fine.
i don't know if this has anything to do with it or it's the game itself.

Same drivers, but I haven't experienced anything like that playing BC2, though I haven't picked up the final version of the game yet, played PC beta for a while

Every driver I have used for my 260 has had trouble (Win 7 not XP). This is the first driver where things didn't randomly disappear and reappear. And the aspect ratio is still not functioning in games.

I had this driver + SC2 + overclocked my GPU. Noticed some weird flickering, etc, thought it's from my overclock. Thank god for third party fan-control software. :3
