Nvidia CEO Claims GPU Performance to Grow by 570x in Next Six Years
Posted 08/27/09 at 04:36:37 PM by Paul Lilly
Technology moves forward at a rapid pace and any parts you buy today could very well turn obsolete in six months, let alone six years. But if Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang's predictions turn true, the order of magnitude in which graphics technology is set to explode is like nothing we've seen in recent history.
According to Huang, GPU compute is likely to skyrocket by 570x over its current capabilities in the next six years. And never one to pass up a chance to take a dig at Intel and its CPU business, Huang also pointed out that 'pure' CPU performance will be limited to just 3x in same time frame.
If Huang's crystal ball proves flawless, there won't be any question whether or not upcoming GPUs can run Crysis. But gamers won't be the only ones to benefit from the additional horsepower. Huang pointed out a number of "real-world" GPU applications, such as interactive ray tracing, CGI, and others.

I bet the prices multiply 570x not the performance.

It's great that the graphics power will be many times faster...however, we all know graphic card sales are really driven by gamers (aside from graphic artists and science applications). The fear of piracy have driven game developers to the console side, leaving the PC with ports that don't require too much processing power. The last game that required a powerful GPU was Crysis (late 2007), it's been two years, and we're still waiting for a 2009 game that'll really cripple the average graphics card. (maybe Rage?)
Unless something changes in the game developer's side, there's going to be a decrease in growth (and need) for a more powerful GPU in the future.
So far i've playing Wolfenstein, the Witcher, the Batman demo, and my average C2Duo GTX285 rig is barely breaking a sweat at 1920x1200 with AA.
HEAT

Even if they made leaps and bounds in efficientcy, 570% would take some impressive cooling. If the CPU does go 3X and the gpu is 570X one would not need to run their heater in the winter. It would take some impressive breakthroughs to reach that level of performance increases, different tech base all together.

I can confirm this statement. I used my time machine that I got from some guy who showed up in my basement a few weeks ago to check this story out. And sure enough, in 2015 nvidia debuts the SLIx100 chipset, Which features up to 100 x32 lanes for use in a SLI configuration. They expect graphics card sales to skyrocket with hard core gamers trying to fill all 100 slots with high end graphics cards.

HAHAHAHA, any changes to CPU's? Maybe 8 (Quad-Cores) on one system?
Lol probably put 570x

Lol probably put 570x instead of 57x, this is not very practical...

GPU horsepower has never grown but incrementally, and this twit expects us to believe his ridiculous figures? Right....

If that were true, then in 6 years, one would be able to play Crysis on Very High quality setting @ 2560x1600 with AA & AF maxed & triple digit frame rates on a single low end card!!!
I don't see it happening, not even 50x. To accomplish the task of a 570x increase would take a doubling of GPU power every 8 months for the next 6 years. At that rate, they would far outpace programmers ability to utilize such power.
I'll believe it in 6 years when I'm running one of those cards in my PC & not a moment sooner...
the scary thing is as GPU

the scary thing is as GPU ramp up the "shinny new thing" they can use that power on swings wider and wider. Now it's photreal rextures, lighting, and poly count. what happens when thats low end?
Will "Realisting fluid body motion" be next.
Oh sure Realisting "bounce" in the Next Toomb Raider is nice but it swings the other way to for Simpsons The Game....

I think he's full of it. I don't think there's anything in the current progression benchmarkwise to indicate that we're trending anywhere near a 570x increase in 6 years on the high end. Maybe he's thinking of comparing the worst bottom line GPU now vs the top of the line in 6 years...

Awesome... so, in the future, a "standard performance gaming" config of graphics cards won't be $600-1500, right??
I'll believe it, when I see it.
I'll enjoy it, if/when it happens, and be a little sad if it doesn't.

you can get some nice "Standard performance gaming cards" now for under 200 bones.
But no the high-point wont ever go away. 6 years from now you will still drop a grand on a Radeon XGTS24000 X2 IN crosfire SSLI HD Supercharged Black Edition+
But look at it this way your going to have real time phsisics, race tracing, HDRL, photorealisitic AA x24 Ultra High resolution texture for youe 42 inch plasma monitor.
