Nvidia Bets on New "Fermi" Graphics Chip
Posted 10/01/09 at 11:30:39 AM by Paul Lilly
During Nvidia's GPU Technology conference in San Jose, California on Wednesday, Jen-Hsun Huang, the company's outspoken chief executive, announced a next-generation graphics chip code-named "Fermi."
According to Huang, Fermi comes packed with 3 billion transistors and 512 parallel processors, which is twice as many as last year's chip. And while it will do wonders for gaming graphics, Fermi is also being aimed at scientists performing complex simulations, such as global warming, weather prediction, and other tasks typically associated with supercomputers.
Acknowledging that his company is behind AMD in releasing next-gen parts, Huang promised that we'll see Fermi-based products within a few short months.
"Nobody likes it when the competitor has a product and we don't," Huang said. "We have a different vision. I don't like to keep our enthusiasts waiting for our next-generation processor. But if we are behind a couple of months, it's not going to matter."

Maybe it's the camera

Maybe it's the camera angle?
I hope so, because I'm holding off on getting a new GPU until Nvidia drops its answer to the latest Radeons... I've always been an Nvidia person, and I'd hate for that to end now...

That thing actually looks BIGGER than a VHS, he must have been doing some shoulder workouts before that display of hardware, I can see why he is sweating. I feel like it should come with a bungee cord to help support the weight inside the case.
Just went from ATI to Nvidia for folding, beyond that I liked my ATI better.

And I'm going to have attach how many nuclear reactors to that behemoth to power it?
As far as I can tell, nVidia has failed to get the memo about power consumption being a significant issue. Then again, they also think that the CPU is a "decaying business" or some such, so clearly their worldview is a bit distorted.
I really hope Mr. Huang

I really hope Mr. Huang reads these posts, or has some unfortunate intern that does it for him...He would be wise to take our (the consumers) advice...as it is us that pay his salary..

Following in the ancient tradition of the footlong 9800 GTX+ and VHS cassette-shaped GTX 295.

Look whos playing catch up. Ive owned and used both Nvidia and ATI, and to be honest im going back to my ATI when i build my new PC in a few months, there cheaper and offer better or comparable performance. They arent getting money this year.

I'm not going to even bother looking at it if it's above $400
I'm sick of spending so much moola on gaming... When the 275 came out for under $300 price point, that was perfect for me.
There are netbooks smaller

I dont think it would matter to me if Nvidia released Fermi tomorrow...if its not cheapter than ATIs 5870 Im not buying it...its fucking retarded to spend $600-900 on something like that.
Ok, we get it

To be truthful "The crysis line was old about 5000 uses ago" should be "The crysis line was retarded about 5000 uses ago"

"But if we are behind a couple of months, it's not going to matter."
it is going to matter. a few months of market saturation from their competitor means that nvidia cannot have any delays, the part has to deliver right out of the box, and the price better be on par with the (expected) performance increase over their competitor. it will be interesting.
I hope that nvidia has a

I hope that nvidia has a part to compete with the 5870 at the price/preformance area. From what has been said about the GT300 series it seams that it will be faster than the 5800 line. But I don't know if nvidia will have a fast part at a price point for the mainstream users.

I'm so sick of Karkand and the 1.5 patch is a joke. they wait two years so they can level the playing field and punish the talented players(like me). I hope it will rekindle the massive FPS community again. COD 4 was great but no planes, choppers, or tanks? Kinda boring. 2 bad about CEVO and CAL
