Well, right now it's the only tablet that has been available to the masses for quite some time. I mean, sure there are some rolling out as we speak...but I'm not too concerned right now. I'll check back sometime next year and see where the numbers are. One thing is for sure, and that's that consumers love Android. So there is no doubt in my mind that Android tablets will eat a healthy share of the market. The few we Android tablets available are not competitive to the iPad. But once the serious competitors start rolling out their tablets...it will get interesting.

The "tablet scene" as you call it is not one i have any intention of joining. How many phone and laptops have been sold since it released?

I just watched a commercial with a tablet computer and it wan't an Ipad. It supported multi touch though so it looked good. The tablets are coming and when they come it's going to be a damn stampede.

No shit? Good post bro. Update us next time there is a new commercial out, tard.

The iPad is dominating because it is awesome! Windows or Android tablets will never catch up because they will all be garbage in comparison. Just wait and see. Jobs is god and you're in his world.

Now, now.... shhh! ...don't get excited!

Take two tablets before bed, and call the mortician in the morning.

Could I get someone to fund me to talk about the Model T's market dominance in a market made up previously of luxurious hand_built kit cars aimed at the wealthy?

Seriously?

One, a Window7 tablet will NEVER really take off. The interface was simply never REALLY designed for touch. Sure it has things targeted towards touch, but it's still 95% mouse/hard keyboard driven interface.

and we have yet to see more than one or two ~real~ android devices and zero chromium devices hit the market, let alone units based on the fabled android 3 which will be, you know, built for it.

Talk to me in two years, when there's, you know, REAL competition like there is now between the i('m not a)phone and Android and RIm and maybe phoney7 devices.

(or, you know, write me a nice phat check to blatantly state the obvious)

History has shown that Once Apple becomes dominate in an area, others are never able to over-come them.  Not in any big way at least.

It's a typical pattern.  Apple releases something.  Other companies go "Look at what dummies Apple is for releasing that.  It'll never sell".  Apple makes a killing.  The others try to come out with competing products, which are usually underwhelming at least at first, and that part of the cycle repeats until someone at least gets close.

The only competition the iPhone has had has been Android, and once Apple gets itself out from under the current horrific provider they are in bed with, I think the iPhone will again take over.

But I could be wrong :)

I'm not an Apple evangelist. Apple has ceased to be a computer company long ago, their bulk of sales comes from iTrinkets. And the latest Air machines are nothing but glorified netbooks at impossibly inflated prices.

On a similar note, I'm not even discussing Apple's strategic partnerships with whichever US phone carrier they're with. I couldn't care less about that, because a) the U.S. is not the world and b) I don't live in the U.S.

My beef with Apple is the way they make appliances ("for dummies") over which they keep a total control, discouraging even simple things like changing the damn battery. You don't "own" your idevice, you "lease" it.

Whatever... there's a market large enough for everyone, Apple can do whatever it pleases. Just don't call them pioneers. They don't deserve it. But you're welcome to drink the Kool-aid.

We didn't need a report to tell us, and we also didn't need an article to tell us about the report we didn't need in the first place.

Despite the novelty factor (and the "first!" syndrome), the iPad is very much a toy in search of a killer app and hampered by absurd hardware limitations (USB, SD, camera etc.)

The real war will be fought about a year from now, when the market will be awash in tablets of all kinds.

If the iPad's "absurd" hardware limitations bother you, then your ship has definitely arrived:

Oddly, despite addressing every single hardware deficiency of the iPad, the HP Slate hasn't exactly set the world on fire. Wonder why?

Mate, I just spent a few days at a conference with a guy who had both the iPad and a Tega tablet (yes, THAT Tega tablet, the one that just came out in Australia, and he had the first commercial sample of it)

My friend is definitely a geek and an Apple fan, but even he had to admit that the more time he spent with the Tega, the more obvious the limitations of the iPad were becoming... from multitasking to lack of ports. Sure, the iPad is a nice toy, but considering the walled garden it lives in, it's no wonder that it peforms well.

Let me know how it goes when you'll try to load on an iPad some pics or videos from your digital camera. let me know how you'll play some real games, not just Angry Birds (you know, real games, from Quake 3 onwards) .... Apple is like BMW - too many pricks pretend it's a status symbol, and there are plenty of better, cheaper alternatives.

Once again, as far as I'm concerned, Apple's capital sin is its attitude towards its audience - who is perceived as being composed of morons who have no inclination to know how their machines work, how to troubleshoot them or (gasp!) replace/upgrade any components. Consumers, not clients, not partners... that's what people are to Apple.

aviaggio

Hard to "set the world on fire" when you haven't even been released yet. And IIRC HP is marketing the Slate towards businesses, not consumers.

avatar

aviaggio

Considering there still isn't any viable competition to the iPad did they really expect a different outcome? Seriously, these guys get paid for this shit?

Those were my thoughts exactly! I mean, since the i(douche)Pad is the only thing out right now, one would assume it is dominating, right? LOL! Sometimes these articles in MaxPC can be really stupid. Especially this one.

avatar

dramsey

"The only thing out right now"? Gee, the last time I looked, dozens of companies had sold Windows-based convertible, tablet, and slate computers for at least the last decade. Of course, except for vertical-market and industrial uses, they sucked, which is why nobody bought them. Why anyone expects the upcoming crop of Windows 7-based tablets to be any different mystifies me. In the meantime, Apple has sold upwards of 4 million iPads to the drooling masses, and guess what? An increasing number are going into the same vertical markets (hospitals, insurance companies, etc.) that those old Windows tablets did. Imagine that...

avatar

aviaggio

It's all about the OS and interface. And I suspect the bulk of competition to the maxiPad will come from Android tablets, not Win7 ones.

If you can't see there is a huge difference between an iPad and an older convertible tablet computer there isn't much I can do to help you.

avatar

dramsey

I guess you missed all the news reports back in  September about how Google specifically said Android wasn't designed for tablets. So you've got Win 7 on one hand, which even Microsoft fanbois admit won't be an ideal tablet OS, and Android, which the creators say isn't suited for tablets. I don't think Apple has anything to worry about, even if they market crap to idiots, which seems to be the opinion of most people here.

avatar

aviaggio

Guess you missed the memo that only *current* versions of Android weren't designed for tablets. This will be rectified with the upcoming version 3.

And newsflash, iOS wasn't designed for tablets either. It had to be heavily modified for the iPad. It's no different for Android.

avatar

d3v

Its all about the interface and not the hardware

Its all about the marketing and not the quality of the product

Its all about who you know and not how skilled you are

What a strange world we live in?

avatar

aviaggio

And this is exactly why Apple dominates in their niche markets. Cause it's about the "user experience", the marketing, and the status symbol, not the hardware, quality of the product, or intelligence of their users.

It's the same reason why stupid unintelligible garbage sitcoms and reality shows rake in massive ratings and are on the air for a decade or longer while really high quality, well written shows are lucky to make it to the end of their first season. Sorry America, but you're chock full of damned stupid people.

Not stupid but there are a lot of followers, lemmings, sheep.....
