Nintendo Not Impressed with New Tech, Criticizes iPad, 3D Gaming
Don't count Nintendo president Satoru Iwata among the Apple faithful ready to snatch up an iPad as soon as it becomes available. Judging by the majority of reader comments in our news coverage earlier this week, Iwata's as unimpressed with the tablet as the rest of you.
"It was a bigger iPod touch," Iwata said. "There were no surprises for me."
Iwata, who one could argue knows a thing or two about tech trends, is equally dispassionate about the concept of 3D gaming, so it's probably safe to say you won't be seeing Super Mario jump out of your TV set anytime soon.
"I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home. How is that going to look to other people?," Iwata said at a Tokyo hotel.
Probably no sillier than Alec Baldwin waving around a Wii remote in this SNL sketch.
Speaking of motion controls, Iwata put to rest speculation in the Japanese media by denying rumors Nintendo is working on a DS-equipped motion sensor similar to the one used with the Wii, while adding that the company is not working on a Wii upgrade for high-definition television sets.

I dunno Iwata.. how does running and dancing on a mat while flailing your arms about look to other people? Who cares what this dude thinks. He turned the gaming king nintendo into some yoga-inspired aerobic exercise platform for a casual market. Anyways, I don't think the ipad is all that special either, but I'd rather have that over a kindle and to think it could replace textbooks I believe it's the ideal solution. I'm not going to read a book on an ipod touch and thinking about browsing the web on an iphone is headache-inducing.

Could care less if a console need to be everything. I buy them only to play games even if its not HD (WII). If I want the the best graphic, I buy the PC version all the time, even if I have to wait a few days after the console release.

I really too think that Nintendo have to step it up as well. It can't even play DVDs. I know that they are strictly a gaming company, but on have to think that the Wii is almost at the end of the rope. The Wiimote is not that accurate, you have to buy additional accesories (Motion +) to make it that way. It is tethered to the nunchuck, and those destroyed countless tvs. It also needs the Wii bar which is not acurate for a big guy like me. Off the sensor, then you will mess up. I like the Dual Shock 3. I don't need a bar for the controller. The system's design is uninspiring. And they don't have to many killer games. The New Mario game is yet to be seen.

I grew up playing games on various Nintendo platforms. It was a great part of my childhood, but as Sony and Microsoft enter in to the world of HD gaming, Nintendo is falling behind. They refuse to have HD visuals and multi-channel audio. Gone are the days where 480p visuals and Dolby ProLogic II audio are the norm and everyone loves it.
I'd love to be able to play Metroid Prime or Legend of Zelda in 1080p with 5.1 surround or DTS surround! If this trend keeps up, Nintendo's consoles will become less mainstream for me, and more of a dust collector... and I don't want that!
