We've known for some time that Nikon planned on releasing the D5000, a new entry-level DSLR, but it was only ten days ago that the company formerly introduced the newest model. Skip ahead and we now have a concrete release date, as Amazon lists the camera as shipping on Monday, April 27th.

Nikon's new DSLR comes with a 12.3-megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor and articulating 2.7-inch vari-angle LCD display. Photographers can still view photos with the little LCD in its normal position, or it can be swung out to be rotated or tilted, opening the door to all kinds of contorted body positions when shooting images.

The D5000 also comes capable of recording HD movie clips in 720p. Recording video is somewhat new to DSLRs, starting with the D90 Nikon released back in August 2008. Other features include:

  • 19 auto-exposure scene modes
  • One-button Live View
  • Continuous shooting up to 4fps
  • ISO sensitive from 200 to 3200
  • Built-in image sensor cleaning
  • In-camera Retouch image editing
  • Optional GPS geo-tagging

You can pre-order the D5000 with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR kit lens now for $850 through Amazon.com.

avatarWait, Isn't this a DSLR

Why would you care that "the LCD can be swung out to be rotated or tilted, opening the door to all kinds of contorted body positions when shooting images."

Does this mean that the LCD can be used to frame a picture?  Why?!  The whole idea of an SLR (digital or not) is that you  can see what you are taking a picture of through the lens.  Have you ever tried to take a picture with one of those "point and shoot" cameras with only an LCD screen to frame the picture, in bright sunlight?  Good luck!  Sounds like an accessory that is completely useless.

avatarI have to agree

Maybe its the write up.  And I love new technology, but I don't see anything that makes me want to go out and spend $850.  There must be more to this SLR. . .

avatarWell, there's more to it than that....

While a HUGE chunkof the(d)SLR camera fun is the awesome real time, true to form, see what you get lense feature, there are also the added perks of REAL lenses and filters, awesome HD capture, a real camera vs. a point-n-shoot.

avatarGood news for budget filmmakers.

In a bizarre move that shows how little the camera industry understands what it is they've created Canon offers two cameras that shoot HD video at either 30fps or 20fps. As far as I know, there's no 24fps option.

Luckily Nikons do. The D90 shoots stunning professional quality video and give users access to film-like depth of field as well as their whole line of lenses. This is the kind of stuff people pay $5,000 or more for.

Now if they'd only fix that freaking shutter-roll...
