Nightly Big Thoughts, Small Talk - 7/7/08
Recovering after a three days of barbeques, fireworks, and general July 4th weekend shennanigans is never easy. But somehow we managed to arrive to work on time today to bring you the news and a couple new features. The things we do for you faithful readers. - Your LCDs may be hurting puny Mother Earth
- What's the world like without Windows XP?
- Obvious: Answering spam is a bad idea
- Solar powered LCDs of no use to basement-bound gamers
- 5TB hard drives in 2010; digital hoarders salivate
- We unbox the NZXT Khaos

And yes, the MaxPC birthday cake was both delicious and moist, even after being left out in the open the entire holiday weekend.

Tonight's discussion topic: How much hard disk space do you currently have in your rig? Would you ever upgrade to 5TB drives? And if so, what would you fill it with?

I just wanted to say that I love these recap entries; they make it really easy to catch up on missed news without necessarily having to read all the articles... Maybe you could move the "News Round Up" tag to the top with Gaming, Rigs, Hardware, etc? It would be really convenient to have that one-click access to a page of like the last dozen (sorry, haven't counted how many stories it puts on a page) or so daily recaps.

cool -- thanks for the feedback! if you want to get quick access to the news round ups, just click the "news round up" tag at the bottom of this post (or any of the nightly news round up posts, for that matter). we're still making improvements to the site, and may try toying with the idea of showing more than 10 posts on the front page. the other reason for the round-up is that it hopefully gives readers a centralized place to discuss the past day's news, or any other hot topic.

Mark's right. With platters so dense, I'd be really worried about the drive dying on me and losing 5TB worth of data( oh the humanity!). Right now, I'm using a Raptor 150GB drive for OS/primary apps (so I can format and refresh every month), a 1TB for data and docs, and a 500GB for Games/temp video storage. I also use external TB and 500GB drives to back everything up.

I shoot in RAW mode (figure 8-10MB per image), and I'm in the process of scanning 50 years worth of family slides and negatives at 3200-4800dpi, so I'd love a 5TB drive - as long as it's reliable.

It's amazing how illogical a business built on binary logic can be.

I'd have a storage vault where I'd have straight ISOs of all my DVDs, to be served up to my media player. Since they'll be rips of stuff I already own, if I lose data I'll just rip it again. Right now I have under 1TB so it's not a viable option with a few hundred DVDs in my collection. It would be nice to do an effortless uncompressed rip and have the room to do it.

5tb drives would be sweet!! I have a htpc, with a 500gb and a 1tb drive. and both are almost filled with my music and movies. That'd be nice to throw a few 5tb drives in for movies and a couple in for a raid.

What if your 5TB drive died and you lost all that content? I hope they're reliable.

I would hope that you would have backed up your information on your alternate 5TB drive. Or alternately, your RAID of 17 Velociraptor drives.
