I haven't even read this yet, but really? What are they going to do? Go back to having sex with little kids? Why pull the plug on something that would help them not physically sexually harass someone?

Yes they can be sexually harassing someone online, but the people they do that to would report them then their account would be banned. So instead of blocking all access they would learn to stop doing that so they can play their games!

I mean, it's the end of the world! Let them play WoW tell the very end! haha. (Don't worry I'm pretty dang sure the world is not going to end...)

"I haven't even read this yet," == "I am admittedly and willfully ignorant of the subject matter, but I am not going to let that get in the way of telling others my opinions."

i agree on the parenting... granted there is only so much you can control once you let your child out that door...BUT, if you are not telling/educating your kid(s) the dangers of social engineering/predators... you need to start now... my kid is 8 now and i was telling her at age 4 before kindergarten. now she confirms and even points out things to look out for... its not easy but stories like this make me wonder if anything was enforced or not

While I'm all for protecting kids from sexual predators, I'm not sure I like the precedent this sets. Not only does it send the message that gaming is still primarily kid's stuff, but it also levies an ex-post-facto sentence on people convicted of certain crimes (many of which have nothing whatsoever to do with children).

Then again, I honestly can't be surprised that this came out of New York, since that's the same state that bullied every ISP in the country into shutting down Usenet because people *might* use it to trade child porn.

Hey.That_Dude

That's great New York. Now get off your fat lazy ASSES and go catch them BEFORE THEY ARE CONVICTED AND REGISTERED!
Great statistic: 90% of Convicted Sex offenders NEVER recommit their crime. Look at that same stat for all other offences... it' in the 50% OR LOWER! So you've booted people who've done something wrong in the past and aren't bothering to find the people who are doing things in the present. GREAT WORK! Truly Spectacular! I feel safer already!

19 YEAR OLD SEX OFFENDER!
I am sorry, but I am just used to seeing 30+ not a teen. This really is a sick world.
The authorities are too late with this kind of stuff, but what can you expect from this system?

Okay, not that I think sex offenders should be set free to run a muck, but I don't believe this to be legal under the US Constitution, under the cruel and unusual punishment clause. These people are already constantly punished by other means, it is NOT legal to constantly make up new rules to continually punish them over and over for the rest of their lives.

First, consider not all sex offenders are dirty old men that rape little children. Some of them are teens that sent under age pics of themselves to their boyfriend and got convicted of child porn. Some might have been a senior in high school who sleeps with a freshmen, and the age difference causes them to get listed as a sex offender. The point is there are regular people on that list, that will NEVER bother a little kid for anything.

Second, it's not like they can't monitor the chats in these games. The gov't has the list of sex offenders. If they can identify them, they monitor them, if the actually do something, then remove them. If they mind their own business, or only interact with adults (e.g. play rated M games) then leave them be.

True repeat offenders should be punish for their additional offenses, but not repeatedly for the same one. How would you like it if you had to pay the same speeding ticket over and over, every year for the rest of your life? Granted the two crimes are different, but what if they punished all crimes like this?

It is really getting ridiculous in this country with who they label as a sex offender and how it comes about that someone is convicted. Its almost turning into a witch hunt. I mean, yes, people who molest children are fricken sick and should be put in jail, but there are many so called sex offenders that have done something stupid in the past and are older now and would never be able to do it or want to do it again. A prime example is a friend of mine who, when he was 21, dated a girl who said she was 18. Turns out she was 16 going on 17. Well, her grandma didn't like him so raised hell, and the prosecutors, not wanting to pass up an opportunity to convict someone, went after him and slapped the label on him. Now he is up in his mid thirties, has kids, a wife, a house, and they keep adding new laws and making them retro active so they can cause him problems. His dMn picture is still on the internet, facebook kicked him out, and soon he wont even be able to play video games. Once he had to leave his house for several months because they applied a new law to him about living near a school and the corner of his house was just over the line.. He got to come back to his house because the school was closed down, and this all happened just a couple years ago! He was all happy because they were finally taking his picture offline soon, but then they changed that law and now it's 10 more years of that. He's always had a hard time finding jobs, because he is requires to this day to let everyone know about his past mistake, and, of course, everyone immediately assumes he is a child molester. Fucking ridiculous the shit I have seen. So that's why I say fuck off New York...you get no applause from me.

I completely agree with you what said and most others. Not everyone is the creepy old fuck. A lot or mislabeled and ruin their lives.

Once again stupid laws by stupid people. Where the AG says a lot support in game voice and chat. Asshat, the voice part is usually supplied by 3rd companies that you can talk to people without having to play a game. A online game just facilitates the concept of meeting people. By that justification you should ban online games for everyone. Because anybody can be a predator.

I agree with your statement. I had a friend that was dating a girl once that told him she was 18 and when the relationship got rocky she turned him in. That is when he found out she was only 16! He went to prison for 7 years over that. You pretty much have to ask them now days to show you their licence.

Yes, but fake IDs are getting better too, so that is no guarantee either.

Point taken. It shows that there are two sides to a story.
Well, things just go haywire when people "just follow their heart" and "do what they feel is right" -instead of sticking to biblical morals (not the fanatical interpretations of such).
You basically reap what you sow, in one way or another. People can deny it all they want to, it is the truth.
Too bad so many are not honest enough to admit when they are wrong. No, it's always someone else's fault, not your own!
The Devil made me do it!

avatar

alabasterdragon

The next time you think of following your heart, or telling someone to do so, consider the following:

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Just a thought.

Why does everybody try to come up with weird laws and bans instead of addressing the real problem - bad parenting.
If parents send their kids to play video games, instead of spending time with them and talking about things and raising them as thinking beings, of course they will be easy prey.
Who lets their 12 year old kid go to an unknown somebody's house just like that? And after it happens they what? Ask the parent where they were and why they allowed that? No, they blame the game for enabling it.

Give me a break and take some responsibility parents! Having a kid does not end up with just making it.

Isolating people from danger might be helpful in a limited way, but the real help would be to teach them to recognize and avoid it.

"Who lets their 12 year old kid go to an unknown somebody's house just like that?"
Watch any anime involving adolescents and that's exactly what you'll see: Children, without chaperone or parent, traveling all over the world, making it safe for bubblegum and gossip...

I agree that bad parenting has a lot to do with it. I'm a father of two girls, one of whom is now an adult. I NEVER let her go anywhere unchaperoned, and if she was going to a friend's house, she had to call when she got there, and I had to speak to the adult in charge. If she wanted to make several stops, I had to okay each one, and speak to the adult in charge of both source and destination. This will not change for her sister. It takes a little work to parent, but it's worthwhile.

Sex offenders in MMOs? If you are a good parent, this is a non-issue.

Most Liberal Progressives refuse to admit to idea of right and wrong, generally subscribing to Moral Relativism. That is unless it's something they don't like, then it's wrong and they will get out their protest signs.

If there is a right and a wrong, they might have to admit they are wrong as parents.

Funny how they don't apply Moral Relativism to sex offenders isn't it!?

avatar

HeartBurnKid

There's nothing funnier than reading a conservative pontificating on what he thinks "Liberal Progressives" believe.

avatar

alabasterdragon

Well based on my experience, every single loon I have run into that had ideals like that, was a Liberal Progressive.

That also doesn't mean that all people that fall under that ideology believe that exact thing. Only a complete moron would believe that.

No, I'm not referring to any particular person as a moron, just a generalization.

Neufeldt2002

Please leave politics out of the discussion, every group has that which you describe.

avatar

Biceps

Yes, please leave your political idiocy out of this. I'm progressive and have a very clear sense of right and wrong, thank you very much. The fact that you think it makes sense to label an entire group of people as amoral because of the general tilt of their politics shows that you, sir, are a fucking twit.
