New York Times Readying Metered Pay Plan for Online Content
And so it's about to begin. As newspaper conglomerates look for ways to stay relevant and profitable in today's free-for-all online landscape, The New York Times is reportedly going to start charging readers for access to the newspaper's online articles.
Nothing has been made official yet, but NYT is expected to make an announcement in the coming weeks, one which will detail a metered pay plan giving readers access to a limited number of free articles before being asked to subscribe.
"We'll announce a decision when we believe that we have crafted the best possible business approach," NYT spokesperson Diane McNutty said. "No details till then."
Should this go through, The New York Times would become one of only two of the country's largest newspapers charging online subscription fees, with the Wall Street Journal being the other. This would also mark the second time the Times instituted a Web-subscription model. The paper tried this once before, only to scrap the project after realizing it could make more money with advertising than it could with subscriber revenue.

Until they have a newspaper that doesn't suck. Until then, NYTimes will not be able to do it. As Nekolix noted below, this is not their first attempt to charge for content, and will most likely be the second time they have faceplanted in this respect.

Of course, that is a highly segmented part of the reading public and usually involve RICH people. I donno if the NY Times online is that much better than say, the BBC online (which is pretty darn good!)

Online advertisement is the way to go, imo. There are dozens of online news-related sites on the Interwebs, so people are, and will go to these other sites for their news.

I give it a year before they realize it's an epic fail and they go back to being free.
