New York Times Accidentally Serves up Malware Ads
Posted 09/14/09 at 08:14:19 AM by Paul Lilly
Judging by the comments last week, a handful of readers were appalled to find Mac ads here on Maximum PC, while others were amused. No matter how you felt about them, at least they weren't infecting your PC with malware.
Some New York Times readers weren't so lucky. In a note to its website visitors, NYT issued the following warning:
"Some NYTimes.com readers have seen a pop-up box warning them about a virus and directing them to a site that claims to offer antivirus software. We believe this was generated by an unauthorized advertisement and are working to prevent the problem from recurring. If you see such a warning, we suggest that you not click on it. Instead, quite and restart your Web browser."
These types of malicious re-directs are nothing new, but for the most part, they've been relegated to seedier sides of the web (porn and warez), and free software sites (screensavers, browser buddies). But apparently they're still a problem for major publishers too.
Browser beware.
What does this have to do

Firefox + Ad Block Plus. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

I like how it was a Mac user

I like how it was a Mac user who made that warning. Now it could be purely coincdence that it happened and he happened to be a Mac user, but the suspicion comes since Mac users are like Jehova's Witnesses, they will go to all means to convert you to their belief system. I've had Mac users go from telling me it's aesthetically pleasing, to those who know I'm a linux user, and them saying "it IS linux that works easily". No, it's not, it's a derivative of Unix...barely, none of the terminal commands for red hat or debian work. Reall, Mac has a place, but you can't use "it has no viruses" as a means to convert a Windows user. Really, when someone decides to make a Mac virus, it will ruin every Mac user because they won't know what to do with it. Also, Safari can be hacked in a few seconds flat, i remember the post here about it. If it's been fixed, i'm sure someone else can find another way to do it.
I don't like Microsoft, I associate with it.

The David Pouge conspiracy
Submitted by pknyo on Mon, 09/14/2009 - 6:50am
Hmmm... David Pouge infects Windows machines with malware, then writes a colum on how Macs don`t get viruses and how Snow Leopard is revolutionary new OS that will change the world. He then tries to convert retarded Windows users who don`t have the common sense to install AV to Mac fanatics who buy all his books on how to become a member of the Steve Jobs Church of Latter-Day Macs. His plan will ultimately fails however, since all of the people reading the BS "news" paper are already a bunch of Mac using hippy latte sipping wannabe elistist hipsters anyways. LOL
