New Windows 7 Ads - "That was my Idea!"
Posted 10/24/09 at 05:56:26 PM by Justin Kerr
When you write the single most popular operating system in the world, its only a matter of time before people step up and start claiming that many of the cool new features were "my idea!". Playing up on this notion, Microsoft's ad agency has released a new TV campaign aimed at making fun of the unwashed masses who are lining up to take credit for Windows 7.
The first wave of ads will highlight the Windows 7 snap feature that allows you to easily resize windows by simply dragging them to a corner of the screen. They do however conveniently forget to mention that this can be done a whole lot faster by pressing the win + arrow keys, but if they did, you wouldn't need to read our handy shortcut tips now would you?
Take a look at the first batch of ads below, and let us know what part of Windows 7 was your idea.
They are OK...

The problem I see with these ads is that they target people who dont actually pay attention to ads... Any geek knows what OS he wants to run, wether it be Windows, Linux, or Hackintosh. These ads dont appeal to us because we already know the features... we already know it is secure and faster and easier to use... heck, most of us have been using the Beta/RC for months (I know I have). Instead, they try to appeal to people who dont even know what an Operating System is.

Yeah, that's the whole point. They don't have to advertise to enthusiasts because they're already running Win 7 or have it on order.
Agreed...

Mac has no features, so they have to poke fun of flaws in everything else to make them seem better by comparison. My Aunt just called me and told me her computer is messed up with all kinds of squares and symbols everywhere. Plus, she can't access email or anything. Then she told me it was a Mac..... I said "That's your first problem, right there!". This will be the 2nd time she's taking her Mac in for repair. Last time it cost her over $400 to have them do whatever to it. Needless to say, she's saving her money this time and scrapping it to have me build her a PC that actually works.

I don't know about how others browse the web, but when I am at my computer I always have my right hand on my mouse, making the mouse pointer snapping in Win7 much more convenient than using "Win key + arrow keys"

So are they giving a deliberate slap to GridMove, which had snap-to-edge before Windows 7 even thought of it? Anyway, I like Windows 7, but the commercial is kind of pathetic.

Wow. These ads told me absolustely nothing about Windows 7. The only useless tidbit of info I got was that it was easier to use and has a snap future to it now... Why is it easier to use, what security features have been implemented since Windows Vista, etc, etc, etc...
Already been done.

An ad that doesn't actually tell us anything about the product being sold? Been done before by some lads from Cupertino, I do believe. A few times.
Missed the point

I think you missed the point of the ads. The point that Microsoft is trying to get across is that they are listening to the people and including their ideas. If it was really about stealing an idea than the people shown in the ads would have a darker mood.

I like them. They're simple, short and to the point and highlight a feature that I know a lot of businesses, art people, and heck, even lawyers can take advantage of!

See Apple, that is how you advertise your OS. By highlighting the features. Not the childish little attack ads you guys seem so fond of. What are you, politicians?
