New Tech Brief for Windows Home Server with Power Pack 1 Helps You Share Media More Easily

Windows Home Server with Power Pack 1 makes some procedures easier

If you have a shiny new PC running Windows Home Server (or an old PC you've refurbished for Windows Home Server) that includes Power Pack 1 (get it here), it's time to grab a new version of the Windows Home Server Technical Brief for Media Sharing from the Microsoft Download Center.

Version 1.1 uses the Word 2007 .docx format, so if you're not running a .docx-compatible word processor, you'll need a copy of OpenOffice 3.0, or you can add the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats  to Office XP or Office 2003 installations.

So, what's new in this technical brief? Changes include

  • Revised instructions for browsing for photos, music, and video from an Xbox 360; you now use My Xbox instead of the Media blade in the Xbox 360 Dashboard
  • Simplified instructions for creating playlists on Windows Home Server and for working with playlists you created before moving music to Windows Home Server.

Enjoy!

avatarHow is Windows Home Server 2008?

I've seen some mixed things about it.  MaxPC had some positive reviews when it first came out, but I heard that there was an issue with corrupting data.  Has that been fixed with Power Pack 1 (why did they change the name from Service Pack to Power Pack? Is that only with Home Server 2008, or will we be calling every new Windows release Windows <blank> PP1?

avatarPower Pack 1 fixed file corruption problems, so WHS is ready

Power Pack 1 fixed that nasty file corruption bug, and it's delivered automatically to WHS users via Windows Update if you have a version that predates Power Pack 1. You can also download it manually.

I'm not sure why they called this update a "Power Pack," but don't expect to see the term "Power Pack" replacing "Service Pack."

avatarHere's how to get a trial version of WHS

Order a 120-day evaluation CD of Windows Home Server here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/countries.mspx. You pay shipping only.

I used the trial version of WHS when I wrote Chapter 12, "Connecting with Windows Home Server and Other PCs," for my newest book, Unleashing Microsoft Windows Vista Media Center. I had no problems sharing media stored on WHS with my Windows Media Center rig.
