New, Smaller Xbox 360 Motherboard Leaked on Chinese Forum
This generation of gaming consoles is all about minor hardware revisions. The Sony PS3 has already slimmed down and dropped a few hundred dollars from its price, but now it looks like the Xbox 360 may be up next. A leaked pic of what purports to be a new motherboard for the console was posted to a Chinese forum. The board is significantly smaller which hopefully means a more svelte console.
The board looks much smaller than the current version, and appears to have a CPU/GPU combo chip. There’s also an extra SATA port present. We’re apt to believe the authenticity of this board seeing as Microsoft is currently hiring a Motherboard Design Engineer to “implement and verify the motherboard and other various sub-system boards that make up the XBOX 360 product line.”
We don’t know if this hardware revision will come with a price cut, but don’t bet on it. The Xbox managed to beat out the Wii in monthly sales for the first time last month. The PS3 had no choice but to drop in price to be competitive. Would a smaller, cooler console with a few extra goodies get you to drop some cash for a new 360?

I was a total 360 guy until the slim came out. So why the change? Well, I just got tired of Microsoft's nickel & dime tactics with the 360. I needed wi-fi. On the 360 it's $80-90, PS3 IT"S INCLUDED! I wanted blu-ray for movies. On the 360 NOT AVAILABLE.....EVER, PS3 it's included. I wanted to stream Netflix movies. On the 360 you need XBox Live $50/year. On the PS3 IT"S FREE! If I want a bigger hard drive on the 360 its $100 for a 60GB! PS3 comes STANDARD with a 120GB and for the same cost as the 360 hard drive, I can put a 500GB in my PS3. And to add insult to injury, BOTH consoles COST THE SAME! Lame, Microsoft. Just lame....

since it appears to have a cpu/gpu combo chip, i would guess so. also, if the same problem happened to this that causes the red ring, it wouldn't be able to do anything, since the cpu would also be broken.

I wouldn't touch a PS3 on my side. Bluray, already got a free player, most game are release for both. If they release a PC version thats where I'll be. If not it still don't warrant a PS3 yet. Till then I rather put the money in my PC (Six core are coming).

the ps3 is worth getting just for metal gear solid 4, not to mention uncharted and ff13 on one disc. Plus the pspgo and ps3 can sync up and I can play old ps1 games on my pspgo or ps3.
But back to this motherboard... I call bs the gpu and cpu were 2 different chips on the original 360 this one has a single chip (from what I see). And I'm pretty sure they wouldn't get a different architecture for the chip for the 360 maybe in the next generation but not now.

Sony did the same thing with the PS2. They merged the Graphics Synthesizer with the Emotion Engine for the slim models. And you can't just change the architecture.

Yeah sony did it but I highly doubt microsoft will get IBM and ATI to create a unified chip together. Maybe if it was a phenom instead of an ibm... And I thought Sony made their own chips for the ps2 which is why they could unify them.

I was under the impression that the 360's CPU was a modified Xeon CPU... But maybe I'm wrong.
If it is an IBM CPU, I can very much see IBM and ATi collaberating, and creating a special unit for the new 360.

IBM Xenos, 3.2 GHz PowerPC, three cores. As of latest hardware refresh, 65nm. This board, if real, is apparently a Valhalla board, so it'll probably be a die shrink to 45nm if OXM was right. The console wars are a win-win-win for IBM, given that the 360, PS3 and Wii are all PowerPC.

a MS rep said some time ago they saw Expandability as being a xbox stregth, add ons, upgrades...
I think their shooting themselves in the foot. console players DON'T want to figure out which add on or version of the console they have.

The one I got now has a nice Best Buy replacement warranty on it and it runs just fine... I will keep what I got. I am not a fool that will buy a new version of the same product just because it is smaller or a different color. maybe I am smarter or just don't have the extra cash to toss around like that. :\

The only way a Xbox of any kind will enter my house to stay is if someone gives me one. Once my kids are old enough to purchase these things on their own, who knows, but I won't buy.

I thought it was the solder balls in the BGA sockets failing that caused the RROD? Because then the solutions would try and reflow the solder.
