New Philips Monitor to Detect When You take a Bathroom Break

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

There's been a major push this past year in being more energy conscious when it comes to computing, and one way Philips plans to do that is by making sure your LCD monitor doesn't consume more power than it needs to.

Called the Brilliance LCD, the upcoming display will feature a built-in sensor capable of detecting whether or not you're sitting in front of your monitor. Get up to grab a cup of coffee or go powder your nose and the monitor will dim its display, a move Philips says will cut power consumption by half. Once you return, the display lights back up and all is as you left it.

Because not everyone sits the same distance from their monitor, the sensor comes configurable for anywhere between 30cm and 120cm, and is completely independent of the host system's software or operating system.

No word yet on price or availability.

avatarGet the same results for under $15 with SensorPlug

Use the SensorPlug for more than controlling just your computer monitor... you can plug in your desk lamp, fan, radio, digital photo frame, and more. Check out http://mysensorplug.com . I think you will find this device to be the best way in saving money on energy, and for less than $15. It works the same way, plug this under your desk and as you approach these devices will turn on and stay on until after you leave (3-6 min adjustable timer). Check it out... I have these all over my house. Great for hallway lights too!

avatarI commend them for trying to

I commend them for trying to add a nice feature. But I'm just of the mindset that PC geeks don't give a flying care about "Green Computing". Atleast I personally don't. I don't care that my PC consumes 400 watts or 1000 watts, as long as everything runs smoothly.

If "lo power consumption" is just a bullet point, then that's cool. But as for me buying a "Green PSU" over a regular one and paying more for it, i'll pass.

avatarIs this

I think this is a bad idea and i would not pay extra for it. Right now and has been for years you can turn off the monitor and leave the computer on when you come back just turn on the monitor back on. You can also do it through screen saver and power management which the IT dept. should set and regulate.

avatarDecent Idea, but i wouldn't

Decent Idea, but i wouldn't want my boss walking by my desk (as he does about every hour) only to see a black monitor, whenever i leave my desk i make sure that there is work up on my screen to maintain the image of a "hard worker" LOL! i spend most of my day right here, on maxpc!       -Denis

avatarMonitors dont use THAT

Monitors dont use THAT much... i dont think the higher cost of buying this new monitor could be offset by the power saving feature.. Anyway more power can be saved by the enduser by actually using the computer for like 5mins less a day...

avatarSounds expensive

When I saw this the first thing that came to mind was "ill bet it would shutoff the screen when it shouldn't". But after reading it is customizable.. who knows.

I myself have been turning my screens off every time I getup for about a year now. (bathroom breaks, well getting food, answering the phone ect..) So I would have no use for this type of feature although others might.

I started doing it because my first LCD would temporarily burn-in if I left it on for a while. After I got a new screen I just kept doing it as I figured it would save power.

Here's a better alternative: Make it a habit of turning the monitor off before leaving!

avatargood energy saving feature!

i hope this kind of tech takes off. i never would have thought about energy saving monitors yet. of all the computer parts/accessories the could be energy saving, i would have never thought about the monitor being included.

glad to see a company taking strides to help us save money.
