New Microsoft Security Essentials Beta is Available
Ah, Microsoft. It's taken the software giant years to wise up and realize they ought to provide a free antivirus solution to their users. The launch last year of Microsoft Security Essentials gave us hope that Microsoft was getting serious about security. While they haven't really pushed the program, it's is at least available. Now a new beta for the Security Essentials suite is available for you to download and try out.
The improvements range from humdrum tweaks like firewall integration during setup, to more necessary updates like a faster, more efficient protection engine. The new beta will also integrate with Internet Explorer to detect web threats. Yes, you probably don't use IE, but most people still do. Security Essentials will moreover be able to detect and block local network-based attacks.
We've always found Microsoft Security Essentials to be an excellent free antivirus program that bests many of the more bloated paid apps. We just wish Microsoft would integrate it with Windows. People should have a real AV application when they start up a new PC. No more of this trialware junk. Go straight here to join the beta.

Suprised to learn how effective MSE was. It's no surprise now they're putting a suite in the works. I just hope they don't follow so many other suites and have bloat that is associated with some (if not all) suites.
Regardless, if you don't like the other free AV out there, this is a good alternative. I use, however, avast! + Comodo Firewall + Malwarebytes Antimalware and don't ever encounter viruses.

I actually prefer MSE over any other free AV's out there. For basic protection, it is nice to have something that doesn't slow down the system and is not cluttered with advertisements.

"We've always found Microsoft Security Essentials to be an excellent free antivirus program"
I just can't understand the reason MPC always push for many free AV other than AVAST.
AVAST is the best free AV i had ever used with excellent protection and most important frequent daily update which all other free AV lack.
MPC is my home page

The reason is that there are several good free av programs. Can you understand that? Or how about, MaxPC doesn't have an advertising deal with avast to exclusively hock their wares so they need to be somewhat impartial. It's also possible that some people don't want an av program that takes over 6 hours to run a scan and so they don't consider it the best. In fact I'm pretty sure it was about dead last in their last AV round up, so that could be a reason that they recommend other ones.

As of 11:30EST, I cannot download the file. It gets to about 75% then drops to zero and won't resume.

I had the original MS Security installed on a few PC's and each one of them got nailed with viruses. I would not like to see this integrated into the OS! I still prefer Avast Free over all the ones I have tried.

I use avast! free, and comodo firewall, and I've never had a virus since. Not one.

Sounds more like your computer is full of trojans but you have no idea because you're using free antivirus software.
