There is pretentious, and then there is pretentious. Harmon Kardon’s GLA-55 speakers are definitely the second type. Designed to resemble a crystal, the pair of powered desktop speakers for computers or MP3 players, cost an astonishing $999.99. Basically, a pair of speakers for the price of a decent laptop and an iPod Touch.
The specifications for the speakers are nice. They have Atlas woofers, CMMD tweeters, and a specially designed bass reflex enclosure. They also have digital signal processing equalization, compact digital amplification, and touch-sensitive volume controls. The design Kurt Sollund, vice president of industrial design at Harmon Kardon, calls “a piece of art that will add aesthetic appeal to any surrounding.” But $1,000?
Aric Annear, who reviews the speakers for Amazon.com, says the sound quality is pretty solid for speakers this size, but that the “styling borders on gaudy.” Gaudy, in a pretentious sort of way.

If I'm spending that kind of money I better be getting "piss off the neighbors" speakers not "sit on my desk and look tacky while sounding pretty good for their size" speakers. Who would buy these?

People with more dollars then sense. My $18 Logitech LS11's probably sound as good. I could understand $200 but a grand.
