Mythic co-founder "Hates Gold Sellers With Every Fiber of His Being," Plans to Crush Them in Hilarious Ways

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

This is freaking brilliant. Warhammer Online, as with any MMO, is home to a number of -- in this case, preternaturally quick -- gold spammers. But unlike those other MMOs, whose developers only emerge, spit a "Get off my lawn!" at the gold-amassing fiends, and then stomp back into their lairs, far too uncaring to actually latch the gate behind them, Mythic is taking a different approach.

"Since WAR launched we have been banning these jerks like crazy," Mythic co-founder Mark Jacobs wrote in his blog. "As of Saturday Night, we had banned about 400 of them. My CSRs have a zero tolerance policy. We don’t wait and let them stay in the game and ban them en-masse, my guys ban their useless, time-consuming butts right away. We have a strike team whose sole job it is to get these guys off our servers as quickly as possible."

But that's not even the best part. Jacobs continued:

"This weekend, we unveiled a new wrinkle in the fight against them, the public ban message. Players on our Phoenix Throne server have been treated to special messages when a gold seller/spammer is banned. I’ve given them a wide leash to come up with creative messages to tell the entire community who has been banned and we keep it within the Warhammer universe."

"Messages like 'Tchar’zanek has ordered the slaughter of [Spammer] and all others of his kind who weaken the Raven Host by providing wealth and power to the unworthy' have been seen all weekend. We will continue this policy and expand it to the other servers. We are in for a real fight against these bottom feeders and it will be a long and costly battle but it’s one we are going to take to them and this is only the first step."

We don't know about you, but we've never tossed our hard-earned dollars into a spammer's alchemic pot, and we sure as hell aren't starting now. Now if you'll excuse us, we must return to killing everything that moves and rooting through fresh remains. Ah, nothing like an honest day's work to set the mind at ease.

avatarwth.. i like the unlockables..

i don't get what that guy is saying about unlockables being lame. i think it helps players develope strategy and even out the playing field. it helps the players that don't play 40 hours a week own the players that do on occasion because they chose the wrong weapons and class. honestly it's almost like they added more classes to the game. what i mean is it's like you can play as the heavy weapons guy's cousin who has boxing gloves and a slightly weaker gun that pushes people back and sounds different. i say kudos to valve

avatarAbsolutely BRILLIANT!

I'm loving Warhammer more each day! This is just another reason to love it!

Anyone who cheats at these games by not doing the work to build your character should be hung out to dry.

Thanks Mythic, for keeping it honest!!!

avatarI have to say that I agree

I have to say that I agree with Keith E. Whisman's comments. I hate the fact that people cheat at online games and refuse to play most of them. I am hooked on Guild Wars and am sure some people cheat at that, but at least there is no monthly fee involved. I would much rather pay for add on's to a game rather than 10 dollars a month. After paying say 50 bucks for a game, why should I pay $120 dollars per year to play?? Just charge for the add ons and if I want to play those, I will buy them.

avatarGreat article. Are they

Great article.

Are they referring to these farmers that go in the game to level up and sell accounts that have the top level numbers for real cash? If so then god bless them. This has been one of the reasons why I only try out mmorpgs and never really get far enough to actually spend money on the service. The knowledge that alot of the other players are not playing fair really turns me off just as much as Team Fortress 2 does. I found out that TF2 players are using a file that when executed can max out the Steam Character achievements to unlock abilities and weapons. Now when I play I get owned everytime by these players that used that file and have abilities I don't have because I refuse to cheat at multiplayer games. So I don't hardly play anylonger. It's not a fair battle ground.

avatarDedication

The reason you get pwned when playing MMO's could be that people are cheating.  Everyone could be cheating at everything all the time.  On the other hand, it could be that you don't have the dedication to play long enough to "actually spend money on the service."  I have been playing MMO's for over 2 years, there's a lot of trial and error in there.  The average MMO has a trial period of about 14 days, so how in the world do you expect to be able to compete with me?  What do you think you are, some kind of video game prodigy that can never be beaten no matter what?  Furthermore, if you have any gaming skill at all, it is quite easy to beat the players that buy high lvl accounts with little to no game play experience or skill, but only if you're willing to put in time and learn to play and win.

We have a word for people who cry all the time and call everyone that plays better than them cheaters.  We have a few words for them actually, can you guess what they are?

In MMO's we call them NOOBS, in RL we call them Losers, and no one wants to play with either.  So please feel free to keep to your policy of not staying in games long enough to get good at them, it suits me fine.  Just try to keep from being too annoying in the chat until your account expires.

2 years isnt that long and if youve been playing WoW that hole time then it counts for nothing so dont act tough. I have over two years of actual game time played in just one of the games ive played buddy. All but less than a week of that are actul play time as i never spent long periods AFK.

YOUR A NOOB and you talk like a gold farmer.

avatardon't be a jackass

At least  he has a good point about Team Fortress 2.  I really haven't played it since valve introduced the weapon changes.  I think everyone should be able to play with the same stats and use their own skill to win.

They basically turned a good FPS into a shitty first person RPG. It doesn't matter whether the weapons are unlocked through a file, or by looking up all the achievements somewhere online and then playing TF2 for days doing nothing but unlocking them.  Team Fortress was supposed to be a team vs team fps frenzy, not some stupid easter egg hunt.

Went from being one of my fav games to ass in no time at all.  I spend more time playing minesweeper than TF2 now.

avatarThankfully

Unlockables don't alter the gameplay in any significant form. They do introduce slightly new strategies in how those weapons could be used - but really, Kritzkrieg over the normal uber? No thanks. Backburner versus losing the airblast ability? No thanks. The Natasha audio sounds neat, but the damage loss isn't worth it.

You might as well complain that the introduction of new maps give people who play more, more time to become familiar with the maps, and thus have an advantage of those that play more causually.

TF2 is still very much a team vs team FPS frenzy. None of that has gone away in any form or fashion.

I reckon you actually have the 18-24 problem.

avatarwhat the heck....

I don't see how adding unlockables in a game was a bad thing. It gave the better players the ability to distinguish themselves from the new players. If you put the effort into any video game, you should be rewarded by the game for that time. It's not like the weapons are so over powered anyways. Valve did a fantastic job of just making it something fun you could get as a bonus
