MySpace Offers Email & Instantly Becomes the 4th Largest Provider in the World

My Space Email

The market for free email service providers has become a bit over saturated lately, but when a heavyweight like My Space enters the arena people take notice. The social networking site has been struggling in recent years to hold its ground against arch rival Facebook, but now finally has a unique feature that might help set it apart. Facebook allows users to send messages back and forth, but this is limited to friends on your contact list and lacks many of the features you would expect from a traditional email account.

What makes the My Space offering so unique is the sheer number of users that that is brings to the table. With over 130 million accounts world wide, it instantly becomes the 4th largest email provider in the world and is second in the U.S. only to Yahoo. Google’s Gmail by comparison ranks a distant 5th. My space users will automatically be assigned an email address based on the vanity URL they occupy and changing the email address will also shift the URL of the profile page.

Feature wise it holds up well against the traditional providers, but unfortunately it doesn’t offer any type of POP/IMAP support. For some this isn’t a problem, but I’m personally not a huge fan of closed email services that don’t allow me to export my data. Should My Space choose to shut down the service somewhere down the road, your emails will be trapped.

Anyone plan on switching over to @myspace.com?

Switching to @myspace.com? Hells no. But I'll gladly add it to my arsenal which already includes at least one account on all of the other major services. It nay not help, but it couldn't hurt.

avatarOn second thought, screw

On second thought, screw Myspace!! I hadn't logged in for a couple of weeks and then when I did I saw they revamped the whole system to make it far less usable. Fer instance, you can't reply to messages now if you're using Firefox with Adblock enabled. The usefulness of this site just plummeted for me.

avataropt out

Can you opt out of this feature? I mean, other than simply not using it. I don't want it turned on on my account or my son's.

avatarThis is not entirely accurate

You can send messages to email accounts from facebook, and a link for replying is included. They just don't have an inbound address.

avatarE-mail is dead? Ha! Yeah,

@ Clearasil

E-mail is dead? Ha! Yeah, um, definitely not. It's still the largest way for people to communicate online. People claim its dead because of instant messaging and the ability to post on forums, but this is definitely not the case.

avatarHate Myspace, its so

Hate Myspace, its so trashy.  I mean whenever you just look at the page you feel overwhelmed.  FB is so nice and clean.  Ads to the side and not to many of them... Used Myspace for a while, and its good for some.  They are finally adding some new features though, like chat and now e-mail, but surely Facebook isn't far behind.  Thats what this World is now, someone designs something and then tons of other people come, take it, and make it better and cleaner.

avatarGreat.

Just what we all need: another email service.  I keep reading columns every other week saying that email is dead.  I don't know if that's true but myspace seems to be about six or seven years too late.

avatar Wait, did I read that

Wait, did I read that right? Changing the email adress changes the URL?!? Who-pee! I can finally correct the mispelling in my URL. I guess thats all I'm using it for...

Couldn't Facebook copy this "feature" in short order?

avatarNice alternative.

It's nice to have other emails.  I have one for everyday use, and a couple for various circumstances, and since I do check MySpace here and there, it may be worth using the email.  My other email accounts are only that, and nothing else.  At least using MySpace I can get other features too while online.

avatar Mr. Kerr, it is MySpace,

Mr. Kerr, it is MySpace, not My Space. Thank you.
