Multi-GPU Startup Lands $18 Million in Funding

Israeli system-on-chip (SoC) manufacturer LucidLogix Technologies has received $18 million in Series C venture funds from Rho Ventures, the company announced in a press release on Wednesday.

Lucid has now raised $32 million in all. It intends to use the funds to propagate its multi-GPU HYDRA technology, which is an alternative to Nvidia SLI and ATI Crossfire multi-GPU solutions.

“Our recent announcements and engagements with major partners have demonstrated that we can deliver and commercialize our technology,” said an optimistic Offir Remez Hydra, Lucid’s founder and VP of business development. Hydra scores over SLI and Crossfire due its unique ability to extract 100% linear performance from each of the GPUs – it supports up to four GPUs from the same manufacturer.

Lucid can pat its back for having secured fresh funding when most venture capitalists have pulled in their horns as the global economy wades through a turbulent storm.

Wow. Maybe it would be better to buy $1200 worth of stock in this company instead of spending it on premium GPUs.

However, it looks like this company is rounding up some serious money. And anyways, If you can afford to piss away $1200 on computer hardware that will likely be obsolete in three years, why not go for it?

How in the world did LucidLogix get AMD/ATI to not cry foul over the use of the "Hydra" name in a PC graphics technology? I know it's not the same thing, but it's close enough of a name in related product category that I would have expected it be more closely guarded by their lawyers etc.

Um... Can't AMD and Nvidia figure out a way to utilize all the GPUs better for much higher perfomance than what we see now? Right now you gain about 30% in performance when running Dual SLI. Perhaps this is what AMD and Nvidia needs to actually give us consumers better perfomance from our hardware. I'd pay for an add in card that makes my SLI setup run much better.
