More Details Emerge on "xpPhone"

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

The upcoming xpPhone from ITG is, as the name suggests, running the Windows XP operating system. You may be thinking, “Why would anyone want a phone based on Windows XP?” Well, it’s probably going to be fast thanks to some sort of “AMD Super Mobile CPU”, and it has a massive 4.8-inch touchscreen. Most people probably don’t want to carry a phone that weighs almost a pound no matter how fast it is, but some will.

The xpPhone promises netbook-like specs including the aforementioned AMD CPU, 512 MB RAM, a USB port, full QWERTY keyboard, and up to 120 GB of hard drive storage. The phone will be available with GSM frequencies for three carriers: AT&T, Vodaphone, and Orange. A custom unified phone interface will be built into the device that allows the user to make calls and access applications.

No one has actually used the unit, so it is possible that the phone isn’t all that fast by computer standards. Would anything that makes a computer easy to use even transfer to this form factor? MIDs worked out so well, right? We’ll have to wait and see. No pricing or availability has been announced.

avatarthis vs smartphones

With so many great smartphones about, why would you even need this?

If you can't live without a computer this bad, then you have issues. I'm just saying. I see no need for this.

If you can see a need, please point it out to me. Thanks.

avatarIt's like a 6 year old P3 rig with XP!

The specs seem to indicate that it's like a 6 year old P3 rig thanks to the 512 MB RAM, a USB port, and the 120 Hard Drive storage. Not to mention the mobile chip. .

avatarGetting close to what I want...

This seems to be getting close to my ideal: a phone with lots of computer power that wasn't designed by Apple. I'm guessing the first generation isn't going to be all that and a bag of chips, though. Which is sad.

avatar three carriers: AT&T,

three carriers: AT&T, Vodaphone, and Orange

That is why this phone will fail.  AT&T has iphone (and would you really leave Verizon's coverage for AT&T other than to get an iphone).  Vodaphone and Orange oh yeah they got the big three listed there who needs Sprint or Verizon.

avatarI would imagine you could

I would imagine you could get 7 on this phone ....there are quite a few resources for loading windows 7 from USB..the only problem might be proprietary drivers on the actual phone that would not run on 7..

avatarCouldn't have windows 7

Windows 7 needs 1 gig of ram to run. Unless they made some form of lightweight 7 or something.

1.3 ghz atom processor

4.8 inch 1024 x 600 touch screen

upgraded to windows 7

built in gps

Why make a big deal of a lesser product?
