Modern Warfare 2 Breaks Record for Biggest Launch in Entertainment History

Surprising absolutely no one on the entire planet -- since damn near all of humanity was counting down the milliseconds until the game was clasped between their grubby mitts – Modern Warfare 2 now officially holds the record for biggest launch in entertainment history. We’re not just talking games, either. Books, movies, and music – none of them stood a chance against Activision’s not-so-secret weapon.
Last year, Grand Theft Auto IV stole the show, moving 3.6 million units and raking in $310 million – all after a mere 24 hours. Modern Warfare 2 also lured $310 million from the safety of gamers’ wallets, but sold 4.7 million units. On top of that, Modern Warfare 2’s day-one sales came only from the US, Canada, and UK. GTA IV’s numbers, meanwhile, stem from a worldwide launch. Thus, all things considered, it’s a photo finish, with Modern Warfare 2 sporting slightly longer legs.
So, on a completely unrelated topic, what’s everyone playing this weekend?

I don't know if there is another game that benefited more from advertising. Maybe Starcraft 2, but who knows. I've just joined the beer of the month club and I can't wait to play Modern Warfare 2 this weekend.

That which doesn't kill me, has made a serious tactical error....
I find it so interesting how FourZeroTwo aka Robert Bowling and other moderators blatantly ignore the Infinity Ward Forums. I see RB posting on his facebook, and tweets regarding how much he's enjoying playing some other game and yada yada, meanwhile the forums at IW are completely lit up with an insurmountable amount of complaints regarding various aspects of the game.
Meanwhile there is a petition with 234,000 signatures and growing every day with people asking IW and Activision to please bring back the Dedicated Servers.
The whole IWNet debacle has literally turned into a free for all among the hacker community as they took IWNet and Steam as a direct challenge. Well the hacks are winning I'm afraid.
This game has the groundwork for absolute greatness, graphics, sound, maps, map sizes, weapons almost every thing. multiplayer is the very worst gaming experience I have encountered in my 11 years of online gaming since Medal Of Honor. Perhaps Activision measures greatness in sales rather than quality work.
Arent we as consumers entitled to purchase a finished product. Last I checked the number one rule....Give the customer what they want, not what you think they need...Instead these companies are getting away with selling and releasing an unfinished product to meet deadlines for greedy execs like Bobby Kotick.
EA did this on a few occasions with Breakthrough, Pacific Assault and MOH Airborne and the backlash that resulted is a huge loss in the PC comunity and complete loss of trust. Only thing is now if we want to play we have to choose among the lesser of two evils..EA or Activision.
I have been to EA Studios in LA to review Pacific Assault upon invite from Rick Giolino, and told them about the issues I saw, they didn't fix it and the game tanked. I also reviewed MOH AIrborne and told them the game would tank...it did. I reviewed Brothers in Arms at Ubisoft in San Fransisco and thought it was a great game with the exception of the multiplayer. Upon invite from a meeting with Jason West I reviewed COD4 Modern Warfare and the game was incredible. I'm not trying to toot my horn here but merely trying to establish I know a little something about the games I am interested in.
It seems companies are selling out for the larger profit margin from the less demanding COnsole community. I spent $5000 on building my gaming rig from parts recommended by Maximum PC based on their Dream Machine of 2007 and the rig still screams. I'm happy with it very much so.
But how is it these companies can get away with selling an unfinished product. How can we get them to listen and respect us...the consumer. Even with a petition with 234,000 signatures doesnt seem to budge them in their arrogance. People such as Robert Bowling acting upon their own cowardice and hiding from the forums, and refusing to be held accountable for the numerous issues in this and future games makes me just want to retire from gaming altogether.

True - but even before the events of MW1, he was still only a captain after years of high risk service?
Anyways, yea, I know what you mean about having the CF in. At least have them in as support role (e.g. the engineers crossing a River in an episode of Band of Brothers were Canadians). Where the Brits or Yanks are, Canadians have always been there!

Very realistic, lots of fun, a bit short but lots of memorable moments.
I look forward to the expansion pack and the continuing storyline of Capt Price and MacTavish.
On a side note, Price is still only a Captain after that many years of service?!? Even Soap caught up to him in 5, assuming he went and passed Officer School... He should at least be a Major or a Lt-Colonel...

Price has been a POW since the end of CoD4 remember. Soap has been in active duty.
I want to see Canadian forces in MW3. For a conflict of that scale, it wouldn't just be Yanks and Brits. Canucks would have a role in that too. Not to mention with us being very close allies with the yanks. It was nice to finally be acknowledged in CoD3.

Oh well, I'll just hold tight for January 26 and ME2 and pass over MW2.

Just because it's the next CoD, doen't mean you should compare it to CoD4..... its totally different.... some better things and some worse...... regardless, I think people are not looking at the game for what it is in itself. If this game came out with no previous titles before it, everyone and their mother would be loving it. I have countless hours in CoD4 Multi and I think that it makes that game still a viable part of my collection.... totally different and fun in its own way..... Its nice to be able to go back and forth while getting my money's worth for both, instead of having it just be "replaced".

hmm must be one big trolling propaganda conspiracy going on huh? sarcasm aside, the only conspiracy i see are the major gaming website reviews giving it a high score. they must be reviewing the whole damn game based on its console version and its singeplayer experience.

Yeah, that's about right. Seeing as how the PC version and the console version are nearly identical, it makes sense that reviewing one would cover most of the bases on the other. Seriously, get over it. There's no dedicated server support and you can't play in massive games with more players than the maps were designed for. It's not all that big a deal, and it really has little impact on the overall game experience. My biggest beef is how short the single player is, but the multiplayer is decidedly kickass, dedicated servers or not.

Ahem, your biggest beef was the singleplayer part? Sounds like you're too easy to please. You do know that COD4's selling point was it's multiplyer right? If you own both games, its inevitable to compare the two and while MW2 is still fun, singleplayer and maybe multiplayer, it can't compare to COD4s multiplayer based on competitiveness. I've got like 8 friends already telling me how they absolutely miss leaning, the absence of cheap death streak perks, and obcourse dedicated server hostings w/ certain rules to avoid "noobtubes". Furthermore, I can't get the logic of a PC game with no console and is unmoddable- oh wait nvm, this game's a console port afterall...
Just like movie sequels, people expect it to be better and people still buy tickets (from being huge fans of the 1st one) to see it and despite early leak reviews, curiousity always gets em. Same goes here, imo anwyays...

about multiplayer but... yesterday about half of the games I played had host with horrible connections and would switch hosts every 5-10min. I dont care for the numbers as far as 9v9, but the 50% of the games hosted by someone on a dial-up connection is no fun (dramatization).

Dragon Age I am.
Strangely on xbox, my gaming PC needs repairs and I couldn't wait to play it. eventually I'll sell the 360 version and buy it off Steam to enjoy some true HD and proper control scheme.
But the 360 version is worth it. Still only 25 hours in. I love the game.
I will probably play MW2 later when I get that PC up and running again (as well as Borderlands which I have bought and didn't get my hands on yet)

This game is nowhere near as good as COD4 in terms of multiplayer.
1. I ahve to unlock Hardcore mode
2.9v9 max
3.dedicated server= 100+mb/s connection some random guy hosting=1-3 mb/s connection on average
4.when the game lags you stop running, and it always lags
5.The tactical nuke is stupid for 9v9 it's not realistic (blah blah it's a game it's not supposed to be realistic; yeah I don't care what you think I like realism)
6.COD4 had better sniper rifles.
7.death streaks are stupid
8.unlocking kill streaks is stupid
9. riot shield is stupid
10. it doesn't have the scorpion
short list

I don't agree with any of your points except 3 and 4.
It is truly a good game except for the fact that you can't play it multiplayer. (I don't care about the single player campaign)
I have yet to have a game pause while it finds a new host, but every single game I have played has involved some sort of lag. It is truly dissapointing. And this is on a 10 mb connection.
The worst part is, that a game might be running perfectly smooth, and you will go through periods of choppyness of lag, it happens constantly. Whereas the dedicated servers I have played on in MW1 rarely lagged.
Some people might be able to tolerate it, it is just too inconsistent for me. And I can't stand inconsistency.

Never said it wasn't enjoyable just saying it was over-hyped and needs some updating for the pc. It is nowhere near the game cod4 was and they made the maps bigger but the maximum number of players smaller. And you can't return pc games especially when they link to your steam account.

I just finished the single player campain last night. At the end of the game, I "YARGHED" because of how it ends. Such a cliffhanger. I'm very much looking forward to MW3 now. As for theother game modes. Co-Op is alright. I just wish that the single player could have been played through as co-op. At least one other person would be playable during all missions as you are almost never without a squadmate.
I played some multiplayer this morning. Was 9v9 deathmatch and it was alright. As someone else had mentioned in another article, too many people makes multiplayer a pain in the ass and not as fun. I think I'll enjoy it more though once I unlock additional game modes. I really enjoy proper squad gameplay with communication, direction, etc. Makes the game more fun IMO.
I'm glad I picked up the game. Sure the single player could have been a bit longer, but if we're lucky, MW3 will be here sonner than MW2 was.

Either way, it's my opinion of the game and your immature babbling isn't gonna change it..... i have hundreds of hours in CoD4, but I enjoy this one the same, if not more.... The most frustrating thing about playing this game is being able to see just how good it could have been. The weapons are great, the maps are decent and I really liked the original MWs gamemodes. The problem is that it has been saddled with an abysmal matchmaking service that handicaps the experience for me. Running on a server with a community offered consitency and is what we have come to expect from a PC title. This matchmaking crap runs counter to this, and makes games very hit or miss. Some matches are awesome and highly enjoyable, others are laggy messes and downright terrible.

So to answer your question. I'll be playing WoW this weekend. Ran Ulduar, Onyxia, and daily heroics yesterday, and plan on some ToC tonight. Will not be buying or ever playing this new CoD. It is apparent that IW and Activision's focus is on the console and not PC. Unfortunate too...the game had so much potential, and MW was outstanding. The PC will always be the best way to play these games, if these games were actually designed with PC gamers in mind. My Digital Storm machine is a monster that eats PS3's and Xboxs as snacks, and I really can't believe that a website titled "Maximum PC" is even giving this game any press. Thank you Blizzard for understanding who your clients are and continuing to focus on them. You can gladly have my $...you have earned it.

I really agree with you "aCi11i3s" about the fact of gamer makers are more concerned about gaming console. See I've a decent gaming PC. i just made it like a month ago with two high end graphics card(need not to mention the name, don't want to start another discussion here). I really like to play games on my PC. But don't you think games are moving towards future. All I'm saying is, its the evolution time of gaming industry. This is right that they r making these games on the PC.. but its not required then that the first preference should be PC too as well.. Future is always good for IT and gaming. Well I've Xbox360 too and i like the dashboard feature too much..There are to many things to do..See that’s the only one big difference right now in console and PC gaming. We need to admit and we know that the gaming consoles are going to be the biggest leader in the gaming world in near future. About Mw2, I know for some skeptical people its a waste of money for others its fun. I'm on the fun side. :P spend my $149 on fun side and had no regret. It was fun to sit in the 3 hour long waiting line outside GAMESTOP (I ‘vent seen lines on gamestop like those before). No one can beat that. Mw2 is a nice FPS game.. We had been waiting for long time to get this game and now it’s fun to play it, either Multiplayer or Single person. I don't care if it broke any record for first day sale or not or even it sold so many copies, all matters that you enjoy the game.

Seriously, I just don't get it. This game is pretty fun and a natural evolution of COD4. There seem to be some really vocal haters out there and I'm starting to think it's just bandwagon hopping.
The SP game is about as long as COD4, so no surprises there. Special Ops is fun in coop mode, although I wish they would have integrated voice chat into it. Hopefully they'll add that with a patch later on, but there's lots of ways to do voice chat anyway.
I guess what I'm saying is it's fine with me if you have a problem with the game, but calling people stupid because they like it is lame. I don't like WoW but I don't think millions of people are all stupid because they do.

Conrgatulations on taking something too literally.
On it's opening weekend A Christmas Carol took 30 million in the US alone. That's at a loose average of $10 a ticket equating to about 3 million buyers just in the US. So more people paid to see that movie in the US than bought MW2. This just in : A Christmas Carol outsold MW2!
Not quite as buzzworthy news now is it?
So I'll reiterate the point for the hard of understanding. Comparing two different forms of media in terms of dollars when they have massively different price points is a useless comparison. if something is inherently cheaper it will earn less revenue even when it's sales numbers are higher.
That's what you get for listening to marketing PR spin.
