Microsoft's New M&A Advisor: Forget Yahoo, Start Courting Palm

Steve Ballmer’s luncheon meeting with Yahoo’s chairman Roy Bostock is being seen as a straw in the wind of a possible deal between the companies they serve. The possibility of such a deal has been ostensibly revived with last week’s meeting and the appointment of a new CEO over at Yahoo. But it might not be a great thing for Microsoft, after all.

Microsoft should concentrate on its core business of software, rather then treading Google’s domain – online search advertising, according to Slate’s Farhad Manjoo. In fact, he goes as far as saying that Microsoft should not even be in online advertising being a software company.

He points out that Microsoft’s core business has been ignored for a while and cites Vista and Windows Mobile as emblems of that ignorance. Manjoo finally has some M&A advice for Microsoft: buy Palm for just $1 billion or $2 billion instead of Yahoo - and its plethora of problems - for tens of billions.

Palm’s upcoming Pre is being tipped as the iPhone killer -  that everyone is so desperately dying to encounter. Its interface does not appear to be a mere reinvention of the iPhone wheel, and may just be at the vanguard of mobile phone technology. On the other hand, Windows Mobile is a touch quaint compared to other mobile operating systems. So you can see why Microsoft’s unofficial M&A advisor believes that Palm may prove to be a better buy than Yahoo.

Windows mobile kicks the shit out of any other mobile OS. Why would they buy palm?

avatarEver here of the Blackberry?

Ever here of the Blackberry? Better mobile OS than Windows Mobil, does not suffer from the memory management issues that WM does. When you close an app on a Blackberry, it actually closes, unlike on WM device as it keeps running in the background. Blackberry OS also supports push email, something that WM does not. The old Palm OS is a better OS as well. So tell me again, how is WM the best mobile OS around? Even the outdated Palm OS supports push email. The new Palm OS, WebOS will run circles around WM from what I have seen of it already.

avatarMy Touch Pro with winmo

My Touch Pro with winmo supports pushmail and programs actualy close. It's just that winmo is buggy and sluggish and have to tweak the heck out of it to get it to run like it's supposed to. But I love my TP and wouldn't trade for the world. Although, I might get the palm pre as a backup! ;)

avatarI have the Sprint touch

I have the Sprint touch pro (great phone imo), and windows mobile is the best answer to any other OS that microshaft has. But Winmo is slow, buggy, with numerous unforseen crashes, and doesn't like 3rd party software all to much. They need a platform that is stable. Period.

avatarIt's obvious the

It's obvious the developers/engineers at microshaft can't develope a thing unless it's reversed engineered. Why do you think they wanted yahoo? Yeah, the money, but the windows live and search features are only mediocre at best. Yahoo kicks the bejeesus outa them. Now they want palm because windows mobile is so outdated, the steam engine is starting to look more advanced. Can't redmonds elite group do anything on their own without having to acquire companies with better technology? Can't they come out with a product that smells of innovation on thier own? I don't think so!
