Microsoft Wants You to Party Hardy for Windows 7
Throwing a Windows 7 party probably isn't going to reach the same level as the toga-wearing, beer bong-toting get togethers from your college days, but rather than wake up with a hangover the next morning, you could instead cash in on a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate Edition.
Such is the incentive Microsoft is offering thousands of employees, partners, and enthusiasts in exchange for hosting a Windows 7 party in their homes and communities to help spread the word about its new OS and demonstrate some of the new features.
"Apply online to host a Launch Party. Choose a day from October 22-29 and if you're selected, you'll not only receive a special Signature Edition of Windows 7 Ultimate but your very own Windows 7 Party Pack," Microsoft wrote on a special webpage advertising the promotion.
Details remain somewhat sparse, other than potential hosts will choose from one of four themes: PhotoPalooza, Media Mania, Setting up with Ease, Family Friendly Fun.

I got the email saying "You can host a party". The copy of Windows 7 Ultimate would take the place of honor next to the copy of Windows 7 Ultimate I already have *wink wink*.

I knew we should of kept those windows 98 launch balloons. if you were lucky enough to have had an invitation to a launch day site, (back in the days when Texas Instruments made there own laptops) you would have experianced the big stink the security goons made about loose balloons on the ceiling at the convention center in Houston Texas. My wife and I Made our Daring Escape with 30 odd ballons in tow !!!! mwaaa haaa haaaaa !!!

What a bummer... I would have totally thrown a bash for some military folks over here in Germany where I live... We always can find a reason to party - what better way then with a new OS coming out...more reasons to drink frothy beverages....

They do it for Tupperware, cosmetics, Pampered Chef, and adult toys. Why not an OS? BECAUSE IT'S WIERD.

I've got ten computers in the house. Might as well put them to work. Plus it sounds like a good excuse to have a bunch of people over. The kids will love the balloons. Some of the adults might too.
You have to give Microsoft some credit. They are trying to relate to consumers better. Sure, it's awkward. But they are trying. It's like one of those feel good movies where the stuffy corporate tycoon finds out he's the father of a spunky eleven year old and they have to go on a cross country road trip to find her missing puppy. By the end it's all smiles and tears. I hope my party ends that way.

Hey yeah, why don't you all come over a watch me on my computer.
Yeah, and I don't think I'll be spending more on the party then the price of Windows 7 at the Microsoft store.
Balloons -> out Shrimp -> out

I think Microsoft is headed in the right direction right now; the marketing machine has really come to life lately. It started out slow with the Seinfeld and I'm a PC commercials, but now we've the laptop hunter commercials (which were evidently enough to piss off Apple) and the Bing commercials (which I thought were actually above average as far as TV commercials go). This thing is a little gimmicky, but that's ok - it shows that Microsoft is willing to aggressively market itself rather than just presuming everyone is going to buy their product (which is pretty much the way it had been, I think).

Now, if only they could aggressively market the Zune HD. Its a worthy competitor to the iPod Touch, and the more people that buy them, the more Microsoft would want to make an equivalent to the App store.
