Ever since Star Trek first introduced the concept of a voice controlled computer, people have been fascinated with the idea of inventing alternate input methods for everyday devices. Some of these involve mapping brain waves, but in a somewhat more down to earth approach, Microsoft is hoping to patent EMG muscle sensors that might finally pave the way for gesture based computing.
Microsoft Research, along with the Universities of Washington and Toronto have come up with a way of mapping muscle movements to simulate user inputs in a variety of different applications and all without the use of a single camera. The video demonstration which you can check out below showcases a jogger using his fingers to switch the tracks on his iPod, and even rocking out with an air Guitar in Guitar hero.
Gee wow! Breaking news, how about crediting the people who you got this from?
How about starting with Techflash whose video you picked up NOT mentioning them & then how about crediting me who even Techflash thanked for bringing out this video?
I'm not really a fan of all this motion technology stuff. I goes as far to say I'm not a fan of the Wii as well. IMO you can't beat the good ol' wired mouse/keyboard and controller.
MS seems to be hot over motion control nowadays. The control surface, Natal and now this. You can expect a lot of home and mobile entertainment features as well as games and ... I guess military applications too.
I can picture the GI raising his arm and pointing a finger at whatever it wants dead and BOOM death rains!
VERY interesting. one of the many reasons i love technology! hopefully we can use an "air" gun in the future for our fps games ^.^ in the mean time ill watch and see where this can/will take us!
I have that Microsoft mouse! One of my favorites! I prefer it over my Razer DeathAdder and Logitech G500 lol. I recently obtained the Logitech G9x though, we'll see how long this trend lasts :p
Anyway, there are a ton of applications that this technology can have. You could link it to anything :p
