Mozilla Plans 'BugDay' to Exterminate Bugs in Firefox 3.5

After several delays and a lot of anticipation, Mozilla on Tuesday released Firefox 3.5, officially joining the next-generation of browser wars where heavy focus has been put on JavaScript performance. But is the new browser ready for prime-time?
Due to the number of complaints users have been posting -- ranging from longer load times to intermittent crashes believed to be a result of the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine -- Mozilla has issued a community "BugDay" set for July 7 to stomp out the bugs.
"We will try to narry down any important bugs that were missed, or were regressions from Firefox 3.5, and get them into a point update quickly," reads a post on quality.mozilla.org.
Some 55 known bugs exist in the latest release, some of which will be addressed in Firefox 3.5.1 expected to be released by the end of the month.

The bugday was not done “in response” to any feedback. It is part of a larger initiative on the part of the Mozilla QA community to increase community participation in Triage of UNCONFIRMED bugs on the Mozilla bug tracking database, Bugzilla (bugzilla.mozilla.org). This bugday had been planned from before Firefox 3.5 was released, and was originally scheduled for June 30th, but was moved because the release of Firefox 3.5 was scheduled over it. If you read the url in the bugday (http://quality.mozilla.org/events/2009/jun/30/firefox-bugday-catch-missed-blocker-critical-and-major-35-bugs), you can see that June 30 is in it, even though it actually happened on July 7th. This is because we did not want to change the URL after broadcasting it. Also, the original e-mail which I posted on the resuming of bugdays can be found at http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.dev.quality/browse_thread/thread/acbfe5b45d533ac4#. You can see we did not plan this in response to “complaints”, but before Firefox 3.5 was even released.
You seem to misunderstand the reason for having a bugday. As I touched on earlier, bugdays are for encouraging members of the community to participate in bug triage. Triage is taking a bug reported to Mozilla, making sure it has enough information, ensuring it is in the correct component, and then trying to reproduce the issue. The Mozilla QA site (QMO, quality.mozilla.org), is a great place to learn more about this. Quoting the bugday page:“During this Bug Day, we will focus on narrowing down unconfirmed bugs to find any important ones that have been reported, looking especially for regressions in Firefox 3.5 that weren't in Firefox 3.0.x. Once we find them they can be assigned to developers to be fixed in a security and stability release (e.g., Firefox 3.5.1).”
During this quarter at Mozilla, we will be focusing on reducing the number of UNCOMFIRMED bugs in Bugzilla, and this was the first part of that effort.
These bugdays are regular events. We have another scheduled for July 14th (http://quality.mozilla.org/events/2009/jul/14/firefox-35-bug-triage), and I invite you to come and join us.

I feel bad for Mozilla and even MaxPC for making such hype and getting this end result. Even though the only "bug" that I've had was the "server not found" errors, and a couple of plugins not working.

I have done some checking and 3.5 firefox is borked for me. I have no time for this foolishness Firefox you are FIRED! You are uninstalled i may give you a second chance at a later date.

First i ran CCleaner to clean out all the crap. Then i open Firefox browse for a while then exit Firefox 3.5. Run CCleaner and it cleans Mb's of info that should have been deleted when i closed Firefox. Hide unvisisted takes away my bookmark sidebar. I will not take the time to debug Firefox there are to many options like "cough" IE,chrome,opera there are more these are some i have tried.

long time beta user. beta worked fine. installed this version went to crap. i like starting fresh with each browsing session. you cant block all cookies to actually use things (ie. any google app) but this release should not have happened. i set it to clear cookies upon closing but it wont do it. i have to manually do it. i know a lot of people noticed this pretty quickly.

ALL software has bugs. ALL internet-aware apps have security holes. NO software has ever been perfect.

Uh...I was being sarcastic...
If one took seriously the hype fans of Firefox have dished up over the years, you’d be left with the impression that it was the heaven-sent answer to all the ills that eeeevil Micro$oft brought into the world with Internet Explorer. I’ve been developing a web application for the past three years. As far as the “browser wars” go, whatever browser you use, you just end up exchanging one set of headaches over another.
I’m not interested in getting into a debate/flamewar over Firefox vs. [place you fave browser name here].

A big problem with message boards is that it can be difficult to discarn someone's intentions or tone unless extra tags like "/sarcasm" are added to a post.

Most of my problems are with all my plug-ins not working any more. I don't use that many. Mainly AdBlocker Plus b0rks up on installation and now I'm getting screwed with popups now. Performace wise, it seems no diffrent than before. I'm sure installing 3.5 resets a lot of the tweaks people do in the about:config page (or use FireTune) which may seem to slow it down.

Sorry guys but in my experience I have found IE8 to be a better overall browser than Firefox. I haven't seen any of the bugs IE8 that several have mentioned. Even the load times for the sites (this one included) that I frequent are faster with IE8. I compared load times at many sites and found this to be true. I am not sure why my results are so different from the magazine reviews but it is truly the case.
Additionally, I prefer several features in IE 8 over Firefox, such as navigating my Favorites list. Given my experience I am not interested in cludging up my systems with Firefox 3.5. Of course on my Linux system IE8 is not a choice so I use Firefox by default. But I don't like it as well.

just about every release of FF has had minor to major problems at release. Don't they have accurate beta testers and some sort of quality control? From the looks of this, I seriously doubt it. While IE 8 is by no means a perfect browser, it works. So I will stick with IE 8 till mozilla gets thier act together and release a product that does more good than harm.

IE 9 will be out before microsoft gets all the bugs fixed in IE 8. You know why they make us take history class in school? Beacuse history alway's repeats it's self. IE 8 is alread Ver.8.0.6001.18783 and counting. And this was posted with Firefox 3.5.30729 and i had no problems.

Like I said, IE 8 is not perfect. It has it's glitches here and there. But in the least 3 releases of FF, it has had major security risks, memory leaks, functions of the browser not working, etc. on it's release. I know FF get's em fixed pretty quik, but I'm saying there seems to be no quality control.

Major security risks, memory leaks, functions of the browser not working. You know what you are decribing all software i guess no one has quality control. Can you name one program,App,game,driver that has not needed a patch? I rest my case.

i hope they fix the "click+drag to desktop" pic save feature...3.0 was so fast! now im using 3.5 and its a whole lot slower in saving pictures this way. lovded that feature from very beginning. posting comments here seems to be slowed, as well.

Good, I've been having trouble with it refusing to load pages. When it behaves it's a little bit faster, but every other page I have to refresh because it just doesn't load it. Hopefully they fix it.

Do you use Ad block plus? I do and i don't seem to be having your problem. Im not saying it will fix your problem. The only add ons i use are ABP and hide unvisited. Some people might be having problems with there add ons not Firefox 3.5. Could be just my opinion.

Really? This is certainly unexpected! Microsoft has really stepped up here. Glad they're such fans of Firefox that they're willing to have a BugDay to fix Firefox's issues. Obviously, I jest. I'm sure MPC will fix the faux pas and put the proper "Mozilla" into the title very shortly. But, it made for a good laugh!
