Microsoft Officially Plans to Take on Google With "Bing" Search

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

Yesterday Microsoft officially announced their brand new search engine, Bing.

Bing, which will be come available over the next few days, is the product of the Kumo project (which remains the internal codename). What Microsoft hopes will set Bing apart is its completely reworked algorithms. Each search page will be customized based on what you search (health, travel, shopping, news, sports). The algorithms will not only determine the order of results on the page, but the layout as well. Each section on display can include guided refinements or a list of related searches.

To see more of Bing before its official release, be sure to check out screenshots here, at TechCrunch.

avatarBing as in Crosby?

They left the "l" out which would have been way better, might as well have named it "White Christmas".

avatarWell when google started I

Well when google started I thought the name wasn't very good, actually I still do. It's not the name actually Live I thought was good. Bing ? No that's worst that google. But really it's not the name, actually google has broken from what I first started using it for, a search engine that would find what I'm searching for not Only !! not a bunch of junk. Even with filters, and quotes it doesn't find a page.

avatarIt will fail solely because of its lame name

Kumo was so much cooler. It has already failed because the name is so terrible. I would have liked Kumo. Idiots.

avatarnew name is terrible

Bing...what were they thinking.  Does not seem like something i would say in normal conversation.  Hey did you google er Bing it?  So i guess at the bottom of the search offerings it will be BIIIIIIIIIIIIING. perhaps not, just BING.  Its a shame that such a massive company as MS can not compete with google.

 Good luck, i will try it at least for giggles...

avatarWho knows really, look at

Who knows really, look at google, that name google isn't exactly a normal name. It's really subjective and easy and that is what counts. That it's easy to remember like Google.com, Yahoo.com and ask.com were. Bing is easy and fast. They had to shorten ask down because it used to be askjeeves.com. Nobody wants to type in a long name when they are just doing a web search. I want something short like ask.com or google.com or Bing.com.

Not to bad of a name really. It could be worse. Could be bang.com or bong.com so it's a good name after all for what it is anyway.;
