Giving it away would still be overpriced. Windows8 = the latest Vista. And anybody saying different is a shill. Win7 works ok, and there is no reason to 'upgrade', unless you want a lousy interface and to line Micro$ucks coffers.

With the dumbed-down (windows that look like windows 3.1) UI, forget it, at any price.

Give me the Option to boot directly into my Desktop & not that lame "Social Media Addict" Metro Interface & THEN we can talk.

I would purchase Windows 8 if it were $40 again, but I"m not paying $200 for something so under-baked.

Not even if they were giving them away for free.

Ballmer can shove Windows 8 up his fat white ass.

I thought the fix for metro was the free Classicshell: http://www.classicshell.net/

I run it on Windows 8, and it looks much like Windows 7 for me.

If you really want an awesome computer, get a gaming computer (or build one) running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and then add Ubuntu, and three monitors or more.....and go for the i7 processor

I despise laptops. The iPad is cool though!

Not interested in PC's, laptops, ultrabooks and such...but come out with a good hybrid at a steeply discounted price...and I might bite.

Discount it all you want, MS. Your non-adopters are complaining about something else: Metro. Fix that and adoption will pick up.

someuid - Actually, the non-adopters are complaining that Windows 8 should have been a service pack for Windows 7 (sans Metro). The reason Windows 8 exists at all is that Microsoft has had such a mediocre showing in the smartphone and tablet markets that they have no chance of catching up without a ham-fisted attack like this. It's monopoly marketing at it's finest. Android has no viable desktop operating system and Apple doesn't have the penetration of Microsoft so, if they can convince everyone to switch to Windows 8, suddenly Microsoft phones and tablets look more appealing. It's a smart strategy, but one that should have been implemented at least 5 years ago.

Dropped windows 2 years ago and never looked back. Linux can run any program I need. Don't think I'll need windows 8 at any price.

I run XP and Windows 7. I will never have a Windows 8 machine in my life.

Once game developers switch to Linux in support of the Steam Box, I'll probably go that way. Aside from games, I doubt there's any good reason to run a Windows machine at all.

oops

My last Windows was XP. Been running Linux ever since :)

I'm moving in the same direction. It has rekindled my interest to tinker with the OS.

There goes Ballmer's 2013 bonus!

First line of article "If you were planning to rush out and purchase"

Well apparently nobody is doing that or they would not need such dramatic price drops.

avatar

iheartpcs

I know eh. This mag is madly in love with Windows 8 and I'm not sure why.

Microsoft to vendors, "Make your Windows 8 hardware cheaper!"

...Overprices its own Windows 8 hardware

:P

avatar

wolfing

It's getting closer to the price point at which I'd use Windows 8 in a PC... keep discounting it until they pay me $100 to take it.
