There will be demand, spec addicted hardware phreaks will bemoan the umbrage and forget this is an X86/MS forum. Many consumers and businesses will continue to prefer a familiar and well supported environment and now will have the option of more varieties of hardware. I think a better approach for mobile devices is a stripped down BSD or other bare skeleton OS would make more sense on lightweight hardware with a Web/VM solution for legacy compatibility but the problem with that is cell carriers balking so much about bandwidth that folks on the go are left sniffing for WiFi like it's still 2004.

I'm about to just ditch my smartphone and use only my PC just because of that, some smart-asses decided that what the people want/need and what is best for us is using the "cloud" and given that everything nowadays takes a lot of space (MB wars on the digital cameras, HD on video, etc) I feel like I can't do much with my phone without exceeding those ridiculous data limits.
Do they still sell PDAs? it would be great to have one of today's smartphones without the phone in it, it would be more than sufficient for me, my carrier already makes me use WI-Fi whenever I can so I'll just use apps for txt, mail and phone calls.

Do it, I went to a $50 dumb phone and still pack 8GB of media and enough web capability to synch with the Google suite; next to no data consumption and battery lasts for days.

You can actually get a Samsung galaxy player for android or an ipod touch for iOS. It's like a phone without the phone.

Later today, no developers actually want a WOA machine.

New Intel SOCs can do everything that ARM can and more. WOA is DOA.

I don't know... I don't think Intel SOC's are going to be able to fully compete with ARM in terms of power consumption and price for a couple years still.

And there's a lot of people that are going to be looking for cheap Windows 8 based tablets. And once the Windows store starts to fill out, these type of users will rarely ever leave the Metro interface, making ARM SOC's all they need.

Only time will tell I guess though.

Rarely leave metro?

Users who don't want/need real applications will naturally move to the established iOS or Android offerings.

Even if intel laggs slightly, the huge advantage of "real" windows support should overcome any small SoC shortcomings.
